Election 2016: Freedom and Peace versus Slavery and War

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2016 – Communism was the state religion. Croatian nationalism was illegal. Dissidents–including this author’s relatives–were tortured and “re-educated.” Croatians were effectively property of the Communist Party.

Inspired by the fall of the Berlin Wall, Croatia, despite warnings from the U.S., the EU and the UN, declared independence. It won its freedom from Communist Yugoslavia the only way possible against a domestic tyrant: by civil war.

Twenty-five years later, Croatia’s  booming market generates per-capita income and GDP growth in the top quarter of the world’s nations and has a comparable Human Freedom Index score. Its Dalmatian Coast is a global top-10 tourist destination. Zagreb, Split, Rijeka and Dubrovnik are engines of development.

Croatians, freer than ever and at peace, are optimistic about their future.

Revolutionary Americans, outraged over British abuses detailed in the Declaration of Independence, warred successfully against King George III to start their national journey. The Civil War generation offered great effusions of blood to extend freedom to African-American slaves. And World War II’s Greatest Generation vanquished Nazi and Japanese ideologues bent on enslaving the world.

Americans were long the world’s freest people, not only because they were unconquered but because the conservative principles enumerated in their Constitution denied government virtually all power save that necessary to protect life, liberty, property, and the freedoms to speak, worship, assemble and bear arms. Limited governments left American minds, bodies, wallets, and firearms alone.

The intellectual and liberal media enchantment with Communism

Yet in 1935, “progressives,” aka American Communists, began an eight-decade-long program to “fundamentally transform the United States of America.”

Ever since, Americans have incrementally yielded freedom to the very ideology that enslaved Croatians.

Ferguson, Missouri, a U.S. city that, along with Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit, and others have been ravaged by Democratic leadership

Under the mantle of Democrats, progressives leveraged Depression-era economic fears, 1960s unrest, and Obama’s historic election to proclaim the same “rights” to employment, food, housing, medical care, retirement, education and recreation that Tito cynically promised Croatians.

Targeting Americans whose fear and greed exceeded love of freedom, progressives bought their votes with taxes extracted from others and legislated “social justice” with redistributive programs from Social Security to ObamaCare.

Progressives bankrupted the U.S. Americans are hyper-regulated, hyper-taxed, $20 trillion in debt, and quitting the labor force. GDP is flat. A depression looms. No amount of borrowing, money-printing, or benefit-slashing can fix things.

ObamaCare converted Americans into serfs: Congress can now make them buy or do almost anything.

Progressives ramped up their attacks on freedom with Supreme Court decisions, executive orders, and administrative rulings that shredded the Constitution.

Public funding of Planned Parenthood, borders left open to terrorists and criminals, a nuclear Iran made $150 billion richer, encouragement of radical Islam, and the feminization of the U.S. military threaten American lives.

Justice Department threats to prosecute Islam’s critics while admitting Islamist refugees threaten liberty.

Government transfers of real estate and “stimulus” funds to political cronies and “climate change” regulations benefitting Third World producers threaten property.

Re-education of conservative university students and firings of faculty and staff insufficiently committed to feminism, Afro-centricity, or Islamophilia threaten speech.

Fining and jailing Christians for beliefs prohibiting participation in gay marriages threaten religious freedom.

And executive orders that make being conservative, a veteran, or disabled a potential bar to gun ownership—freedom’s ultimate guarantor—threaten the bearing of arms.

The U.S. has devolved into a pessimistic and divided nation its Founders would abhor, and against which they would likely take up arms to battle for their freedom.

In sum, both Croatia (1991) and the U.S. (1776) won their independence, proving that a tyrannized people can rise up in arms in a successful gambit for freedom. And both self-inflicted the scourge of Communism.

Yet here the similarities end.

Over the last quarter-century, as Croatia freed itself from communism, the U.S. deepened its embrace of that wicked foreign ideology. The U.S. is now only nine spots above Croatia on the Human Freedom Index and slouching backwards along the freedom-slavery continuum.

While Croatians unified their purpose and values in winning their recent civil war, Americans, angry, fearful, and divided between conservatives and progressives who agree only that the other is the enemy, may soon be fighting another.

To the degree we cannot command our bodies, time, and resources, we are slaves. Reagan’s words echo. Freedom is forged on the anvil of war and bought with blood. Donald Trump’s candidacy, among other indicators, suggests American conservatives, like their Croatian cousins, have had enough and are ready to fight Communists to regain their freedom.

As Abraham Lincoln counseled,

“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”

History teaches that the natural condition of humanity is neither freedom nor slavery. Both result from human action. American voters have a choice.

Electing Communism, progressivism, socialism or whatever Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders label their platform of taxing, spending, and freedom-bashing, guarantees more slavery and more war.

Electing conservatism by voting for any Republican candidate guarantees a more limited government, more freedom, and more peace.

Yet, as they have for 80 years, many—perhaps most—Americans will elect slavery over freedom for the goodies bought with other people’s money, time, and toil. And so, a second U.S. Civil War may be necessary to pull up the roots Communism has sunk deep into our soil.

But election 2016 is our last best hope to avoid it. Pray the voters choose well.
