AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has launched a new passenger podcast series, “The Journey.” In each episode, a KLM passenger talks about a specific journey and how it has changed their lives. The podcast takes listeners to different parts of the world, from the snowfields of Alaska to the crowded streets of New Delhi.
The intention is to use each podcast to emphasize the transformative power of travel.
KLM podcast: “The Journey” – Episode One
Episode One focuses on Linda Nijlunsing and a journey she took to the wilds of Alaska in 1983. There she meets Big Jim, a trapper, and fisherman who lives in the middle of nowhere.
After a series of adventures that began grudgingly platonic their personal connection and relationship grow. They get married. Big Jim teaches Linda to trap, and fish, and survive in the Alaskan hinterland.
The adventuresome nature that brought them together begins to fray under their different personalities. After she becomes pregnant and gives birth their relationship deteriorates.
They divorce. Big Jim returns to his cabin in the wilderness. Linda returns to Holland where she lives today. Her tale is by turns poignant, rich, interesting, and contemplative. It is a study of the twists and turns of life, and how people deal with it.
A story of adventure. Of daring.
Of love found, and then torn apart.
KLM podcast: “The Journey” – Episode Two
Episode Two tells the story of Samba Schutte and his time as an intern in the dusty rural village of Ugunja in Kenya. Samba is from a Dutch father, with a mother from Mauritania. His father is an aid worker who speaks French, English, Dutch, and Ethiopian. Schutte grew up in Ethiopia.
After studying theatre at the School of Arts in Utrecht, Holland, Schutte heads to Kenya to teach improvisational theatre in a tiny village.
There in the midst of poverty and deprivation, he learned the life lessons that guided his future. He went on to tour the Mediterranean from Turkey to Libya working as a stand-up comic. He returned to Holland to continue his career.
Improbably, his journey takes him to Los Angeles, where he has become a successful stand-up comic after being discovered at The Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip.
But he gives the credit to his success to his time in a tiny village in Kenya with no electricity and running water. The dreams of his youth have become the reality of his future.
Every two weeks another episode will be loaded into the podcast.
