BUFFALO, NY — President Trump’s recent Tweets have pointed out that there is a huge revolt by many states, in defense of mileage and clear air standards. California wants to control and create the regulations through the CARB (California Air Research Board) and Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Automakers are caught in the crosshairs. Four major automakers, in fear of what President Trump will put into the new regulations, come this September, made an agreement with California and this created a nasty fight.
Ford, BMW, Volkswagen Group and Honda sided with the states, led by California, on the clear air side of the debate. This goes against Mr. Trump. On Tuesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom said Mercedes Benz would join this coalition. In addition to a sixth unnamed company.
The New York Times cited two sources at Mercedes to confirm the governor’s claim, as well as executives at the rumor sixth company. If both come on board, the coalition would represent a collective 40-percent of the US market share.
