SAN DIEGO, Calif., December 28, 2018 – Among all the thrills boxing offers, let’s face it: nothing rivals a spectacular, fight-ending knockout for sheer excitement in sports, any sport in Ringside Seat’s opinion … as long as the person on the canvas gets up safely and in good health to fight another day.
All our lead Knockout of the Year finalists took place in the second half of 2018, in divisions from bantamweight up to heavyweight and divisions in between.
But our hands down winner is two division champion Naoya Inoue of Japan as he made a statement in the opening round of the World Boxing Super Series tournament on October 7. Inoue is called “The Monster” for good reason. He needed just 70 seconds to drop former champion Juan Carlos Payano of the Dominican Republic in spectacular fashion. Inoue set up the straight right to the chin with pawing jabs, getting a sense of Payano’s timing, and then drilled him with pinpoint accuracy.
See the entire Inoue vs. Payano fight here:
Until this fight, Payano had never been stopped and had only one previous loss in a solid career. Inoue is now undefeated in 17 fights with 15 knockouts. Fans now get to look forward to Inoue’s fights in the semifinal and final round, hopeful to see second-seed Inoue take on South African sensation Zolani Tete.
