SAN DIEGO, September 12, 2014 – It’s Fight Week in Las Vegas in advance of Saturday’s Showtime PPV event featuring the bout called “Mayhem,” the rematch between undefeated Floyd Mayweather (46-0, 26 KOs) and challenger Marcos Maidana of Argentina (35-4, 31 KOs).
Fight Week hype is over the top for the biggest of pay per view events and anything involving Mayweather is off the chain, a very expensive gold chain around the neck of boxing’s pound for pound leader and the world’s highest paid athlete for the second year running.
With the big money involved, boxing’s biggest bouts now prop up a lot more than just the hour in the ring on Saturday. For weeks there are news conferences, public events accessible for free to fans, behind-the-scenes preview documentaries, and more to keep the media reporting on the fight all the way up to the opening bell. As much as it would benefit the sport, there will never be a return to the day of the fight weigh in. Not when the Friday weigh-in which is a televised public event with a huge audience itself.
All of this is to generate hype to convince the fans at home it’s worth their $60 (or $70) in pay per view fees or maybe a $20 to a local watering hole or movie theater to catch the action.
If you’ve got a notion to book a weekend in Las Vegas on the fly, there are still tickets for the live event available. Sorry to say, the cheap seats at $350 and $550 are sold out. Tickets from $750 to $1,500 are still available, limited to eight people.
By merely writing about this we acknowledge being complicit in the hype, but we also offer you an alternative way to enjoy “Mayhem” with our Communities live chat, bringing you blow by blow reports, commentary and your opportunity to add to the conversation.
The fight will be shown on Showtime PPV on Saturday, September 13 starting with the televised undercards at 8 p.m. ET. This is an hour earlier than usual. Our Communities Digital News live online chat starts at 8 p.m. ET with the televised undercard fights.
The Fight Week schedule for “Mayhem”:
Tuesday, September 9
The week’s events kicked off Tuesday with the “grand arrival” of the fighters at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas to greet fans. For Mayweather, a Las Vegas resident, it’s just a drive down the street. For Maidana it’s a bigger deal, although he’s getting used to the routine.
Fans jammed the lobby to see Mayweather and Maidana arrive, give interviews, and press the flesh. The undercard fighters also participated. But other than the loyal fans holding the blue and white Argentinean flags, we all know who people were waiting to see. Show them the Money.
