SAN DIEGO, November 22, 2014 – Will we witness the performance of one of boxing’s all-time great champions, or the emergence of a bonafide rising star, the real deal in the ring?
Tonight’s fight between superstar Manny Pacquiao and undefeated challenger Chris Algieri has the potential to be a life-changing event. A decisive Pacquiao victory will keep the eight division champion at the top of the sport; a loss could send him into retirement. A win for Chris Algieri would be nothing less than life-changing, but even a strong showing against Pacquiao is a victory in its own way.
True fans of the Sweet Science are counting down the hours. And so are we at Communities Digital News.
Join us for a live fight chat online covering the action for you right here on Communities Digital News. We will get the party started with undercard fights at 9 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. Pacific Time, with the main event scheduled at approximately 11 p.m. Eastern, 8 p.m. Pacific.
Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) needs to put more distance between himself and his still shocking knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in December 2012, and the questions about his “killer instinct” resulting from his decision victories over Brandon Rios and Timothy Bradley.
Algieri, undefeated at 20-0 with eight knockouts is the current light welterweight champion, coming up to a catch weight of 144 pounds for this fight. Since his out of nowhere victory over Ruslan Provodnikov, he’s shown the heart of a warrior, going toe to toe with the relentless Siberian Rocky after defeating Emanuel Taylor in decisive fashion earlier in the year. Make no mistake, Algieri earned this opportunity.
It all comes down to who wants it more. Pacquiao has the speed and power. Algieri is smart, tough, and has little to lose. There are a lot of variables in play that could prove to be game changing for either man.
Fans will be treated to several decent undercard fights. China’s Zou Shiming (5-0, 1 KO) faces Kwanpichit Onesongchaigym of Thailand (27-0, 12 KOs) in the flyweight division; exciting featherweight Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine (2-1, ! KO) is up against Chonlatarn Pirpiyapinyo of Thailand (52-1, 33 KOs), in a WBO title tuneup; and Jessie Vargas of Las Vegas (25-0 9 KOs) and Antonio DeMarco of Mexico (31-3-1, 23 KOs) fight for the WBA world super lightweight title. Shiming, Lomachenko, and Vargas are among Top Rank’s rising stars and should all put on a good show and prevail.
