SAN DIEGO, April 21, 2016 – Unified middleweight champion Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin makes his first title defense of 2016 this Saturday, April 23 at The Forum in Los Angeles against undefeated mandatory challenger Dominic Wade.
Standing undefeated at 34-0 with 31 knockouts, Golovkin will defend his WBA, IBF, IBO, and WBC interim titles against Wade, who brings a record of 18-0 with 12 knockouts into the fight.
As in Golovkin’s last two title defenses, the co-main event features the consensus top pound for pound boxer in the world, WBC flyweight world champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (44-0, 38 KOs) of Nicaraugua against challenger McWilliams Arroyo (16-2, 14 KOs) of Puerto Rico.
The fighters, their trainers and promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions hold their final pre-fight news conference today in Los Angeles. You can see it streaming live here in its entirety today on Communities Digital News starting at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT.
The double feature has developed the nicknames “Big Drama Show” for Golovkin, and “Little Drama Show” for Gonzalez. They are well earned due to their aggressive, fan friendly style and knockout ratios. Both champions are fan favorites in Southern California; Golovkin is a Los Angeles resident. The fight is heading for a sellout with over 14,000 tickets sold to date.
“We are expecting over 16,000 people at the Forum on Saturday night,” K2 promoter Tom Loeffler told me during a an early news conference. “It is definitely one of the biggest shows in California history. Over 16,000 will be considered a sell-out and as I mentioned it will be the highest attendance figure for any boxing event since the Forum was renovated … It’s been almost a year since they fought at the Forum and the fans have responded for these two great match-ups.”
