SAN DIEGO, October 1, 2014 – Go ahead, check the calendar. Yes, it’s Wednesday. Yes, there is boxing action tonight on ESPN2. Don’t question it, enjoy it.
Middleweights Curtis Stevens (27-4, 20 KOs), age 29, of Brooklyn and Hassan N’Dam (30-1, 18 KOs, age 30, a native of Cameroon now living in France, find themselves in a position to perform boxing CPR and breathe life back into their careers.
The pair will square off in a rare midweek bout out of Southern California at a venue called the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, with a broadcast on ESPN2 starting at 9 p.m. ET. It is an IBF middleweight elimination bout with the winner becoming a mandatory challenger for the winner of the Sam Soliman vs. Jermain Taylor bout next week, also a Wednesday fight on ESPN2. Both fighters made weight with ease on Tuesday.
Last year, Stevens grossly oversold himself before getting an early Halloween scare, turning into the latest zombie victim of middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s vicious punching power. He ended up becoming an unfortunate boxing meme in the process. Since then, Stevens regrouped and has put two TKO victories on his record.
N’Dam got on the map with a loss to Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin in a wildly entertaining bout. Quillin put N’Dam on the canvas several times, but N’Dam showed tremendous will power and went the distance. It was the sort of performance fans don’t forget. Since then, N’Dam has won two tune up fights in Spain and Ireland. He is back on an American stage to prove he’s still got a lot to offer at the top level.
This pair should provide fan friendly action. They both have power when either man can get in position. The key to the fight will be who can employ movement and boxing skills to stay out of his opponent’s way long enough to land the kind of shot that could end the fight. It’s a big challenge for N’Dam, but he is up to it and I give him the edge tonight. But don’t show up late for this one.
If the two bouts this week and next score decent ratings for ESPN2, perhaps we will get more midweek bouts on the schedule. Come on, the NFL has taken over Monday and Thursday. Give fight fans our Wednesday Night Boxing, please. Geico, this is a golden opportunity to become a sponsor.
So do your part. Watch and tell a few friends to tune in. Set up your DVR, “Modern Family” and “Law & Order: SVU” can wait.
