LOS ANGELES, Calif., August 26, 2018 – This one was for the fans, and they turned up to see their boxing heroes at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday with their enthusiasm on full display.
Ahead of their rematch showdown on September 15 in Las Vegas, unified middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) and Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) hosted a media workout in front of thousands of fans. They arrived early and waited patiently for their chance to see their favorite put on a display of their skills.
Critics of the sport like to say ‘boxing is dead.’ Don’t tell it to anyone who was in the stadium on Sunday, waving their flags and rocking their favorite fighter’s gear. And don’t tell it to anyone lucky enough to get something personally autographed.
This event was for the boxing fans
For a fan’s eye view of the event, Communities Digital News gathered video highlights from the fan’s perspective – this was their day.
The pair and their respected trainers, Abel Sanchez (Golovkin) and Eddy and Chepo Reynoso (Alvarez) also spoke with boxing media.
The two teams and two fighters didn’t cross paths, but they had plenty to say to each other. The gloves are off.
Alvarez: ‘My objective is the knockout’
“This fight is personal because of all that’s been said, and it will be difficult to regain the respect that we once had,” said Alvarez. “The statements that have been made about me have given me more motivation to train harder.”
Alvarez says he’s watched video of the first fight, and knows how to correct his mistakes this time. “I know that I can hurt him. I hurt him in the first fight, and I’m going to hurt him even more in the second fight. My objective is the knockout and I’ll be looking for that from the opening round.
“I have to win convincingly,” added Alvarez. “It has to be a knockout to erase any doubts.”
Golovkin: ‘It is another big chance to beat him again’
“Canelo, he is not a champion,” declared Gennady Golovkin. “He is a liar who has no respect for the sport of boxing or its fans. I want to stay world champion and bring all my belts home. I am ready to star in another Big Drama Show.”
“I am happy to get at Canelo again,” said Golovkin. “It is another big chance to beat him again. Of course I want to knock out Canelo. It would be nice if Canelo came to fight this time. I don’t believe what he says about how he will fight me this time. He said the same thing before our first fight. I will definitely be more aggressive in this fight.”
Golovkin said he was upset about Alvarez failing drug tests, causing a cancellation of their original rematch set last May. “But I was more upset at Canelo’s team,” added Golovkin. “The excuses they gave, their attitude, and Canelo’s reaction, it showed that they have no respect for the sport or the fans. They showed their real faces. They are fakes.” Golovkin said he’s lost all respect for Canelo.
What do the boxing tea leaves say?
Unlike their previous bout, this one has gotten personal. It’s unusual for two fighters to avoid each other completely until the final weigh-in, but this is what Alvarez and Golovkin intend to do. So far, it’s playing up the animosity and the intrigue for what should be one of the more intense weigh-ins in recent boxing memory.
For everyone reading the boxing tea leaves, did it mean anything that Golovkin removed his shirt for his workout, but Alvarez did not? Did it mean anything that Golovkin eagerly signed autographs for fans, but Alvarez declined and left immediately following his workout? Did it mean anything that there were far more Golovkin fans than Alvarez fans present among the predominantly Mexican-American fans present at the stadium? Not likely, but it won’t stop the chatter over the next three weeks before Fight Night arrives, and the good-natured discussion is one more reason people enjoy being boxing fans.
