COLORADO SPRINGS: In politics, the phrase, “Sword of Damocles” hanging over someone’s head conjures threat, danger, and unrest for the recipient. “Never Trumper’s,” the “Washington elite,” Fake News purveyors, do-nothing Rhinos (Republicans in name only,) socialists, world leaders, and Special Prosecutor, Robert Mueller, with his merry band of angry Democrats, have salivated over the specter of a Sword of Damocles precariously hanging over President Trump’s head.
With the prosecutor wielding his sword, sifting through the fine print of all things ‘Trump,’ his Deep State followers anxiously await “The Big Day.” On that day, their nemesis, the president will be frog-marched out of Washington, their “Sword of Damocles” has fallen and saved the kingdom.
The Sword of Damocles explained
Daniel Mendelsohn, in an August 19, 2011 show, “All Things Considered,” explained the metaphor to PBS listeners:
“The story goes that Dionysius, the tyrant of Syracuse had a courtier named Damocles who was more or less a professional flatterer who lay around these opulent feasts saying nice things to Dionysius.
So once, he commented to the effect of, oh, how great it would be to be the king. Moreover, Dionysius said, oh? Well, if you want to know what that’s like, you can come to sit in my throne. Which Damocles did. Dionysius made sure that Damocles with rich food and excellent service from cute servers. Beautiful perfumes and scented candles made for a relaxing atmosphere.
So Damocles was thinking to himself, how very wonderful then, it must be. Until he noticed the gleaming sword, hung by a single horsehair, hanging above the throne.”
Damocles begged Dionysius to be allowed to leave the throne and to go back to his subservient position as a courtier. He got the point, which is that anybody who gets to enjoy immense wealth, luxury and power also is living under a “threat.”
For those, mostly Fox News viewers, who have watched as the President and his senior aides have been vilified night after night by the mainstreabullied by the Special Prosecutor, and withstood the Fake News media’s endless licentious chortling, the fight for the legitimacy of the Trump presidency is an endless nightmare. The liberal Democrats seem not to want to stop, so intent they are on ridding themselves of this president.
There’s a Washington story attributed to the late President Lyndon B. Johnson when he was a senator. He reportedly was talking on and on about one of his opponents. His aides were appalled by the tenor of his defamatory comments.
Finally, one protested,
“But, Senator, you know all that’s not true. Why do you keep saying it?” The senator’s crisp reply, “Oh, hell. I know it’s not true. However, I love to hear him deny it.”
For Trump’s detractors on both sides of the aisle, that bottom layer of the Deep State, leaked documents, and congressional grandstanding, the presidency seems to be nothing more than a joke.
Liberals, Democrats and Media’s favorite blood sport
Lack of respect for the Commander in Chief and his White House has become a blood sport. The complicit media stirs the pot in their self-appointed role of arsonists: they set the fires, then stand back and report about a White House in chaos.
Their wishful projections have a Nixonian-like president wandering the halls at night, talking to portraits of his predecessors.
They know only too well that President Trump, who is a counter-puncher will never fail to answer the pettiest of the petty of his accusers.
A New Yorker through and through, he takes to his direct line to his supporters – Twitter. His pithy statements obsessively are covered and dissected on a daily basis. To them, he’s in the schoolyard with them, mixing it up. They have him cornered and surrounded. His end is nigh.
Alternatively, is it?
The man and the deal
In recent remarks to the media, President Trump may have tipped his hand. Like an adept poker player, it appears his reticence to take action has not been out of fear or desperation. It’s been strategy all along.
As usual, negotiator Trump seems to be ahead of the pack.
As he calmly fails to fire the Mueller witch-hunt, he has instead chosen to hold one earth-shaking card, the eventual declassification of documents related to the Russia investigation.
By his reading, they will be damaging to Democrats if they decide to investigate him when they take control of the House next year.
In a recent interview with The New York Post, he warned opponents,
“If they want to play tough, I will do it,” Trump told the Post. “They will see how devastating those pages are.”
He suggested that the documents would serve as a counterpunch to Democrats if they choose to investigate him.
“If they want to go and harass the president and the administration, I think that would [be] the best thing that could happen to me because I’m a counterpuncher and I will hit them so hard, they’ve never been hit like that,” he said. “You know what? I think that will help my campaign. That will be the beginning of my campaign as president.”
Taking note of the President Trumps tip-off, his supporters may now wish to ask Deep Stater’s, “Over whose head is that Sword of Damocles is now hanging? Could it be yours? Are you the dupes? Are you the checker’s players who, all along, have had no idea you’ve been playing against a world-class chess player?”
Good luck with that. However, watch out for that swinging sword.
Because a master gamesman has played you.
