WASHINGTON, Aug. 6, 2015 – It’s astounding how much misinformation is being spread in regards to the five undercover videos recently uncovered by a sting operation launched against Planned Parenthood by the Center for Medical Progress. It comes as no surprise that the vast majority of those obfuscations have come from the side playing defense, in this case Planned Parenthood and its proxies on the left. The following five lies have all been recycled and repeated ad nauseam as if they were agreed upon facts and, while you may not agree with the conclusions, there is much more to the story than the left is letting on:
Planned Parenthood is not selling baby parts. No way. No how.
This is absolutely not a fact. It is also directly contradicted by a significant amount of evidence. Former Planned Parenthood director Abby Johnson testified under oath in front of the Texas Senate that shipping the body parts to labs across the country cost around $5 to $10 per child. The cost that each lab paid for each body part or sometimes fully intact body was around $200 each time. Her Houston Planned Parenthood allegedly had a quota of 75 abortion procedures per day, which equates to approximately $30,000 of income per week. This number, even if wildly inaccurate, very clearly represents more than the cost of shipping. This, if true, is against the law.
The clinic that Abby Johnson worked for was Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, the same clinic that is featured in the fifth video, which shows a doctor explain that abortion procedures and prices are altered based on demand. That same clinic ultimately reached a settlement with the government for $4.3 million to settle an accusation of Medicaid fraud based on the testimony of Abby Johnson and others.
Of course Abby Johnson could be lying. It is possible this woman had a personal vendetta against this noble and transparent organization and set out to lie about them over and over purely out of spite. It is also possible that she is telling the truth, and her position is supported by almost every word out of the doctor’s mouths in each one of these recently released videos.
Planned Parenthood has repeated the seemingly false claim that in exchange for the organs and tissue of aborted children, the organization only receives compensation for shipping and storage. However, almost all of the videos that have surfaced so far contain footage of Planned Parenthood officials going back and forth on prices and essentially haggling over what prices are paid for different parts.
One of the officials even jokes about wanting a Lamborghini. Shipping and storage costs don’t add up to the cost of any car, let alone a Lamborghini. This was a tasteless joke to be sure and should not be taken too seriously, but if Planned Parenthood is honest in its insistence that it is only reimbursed for shipping, why would the cost per specimen be such a question mark? The shipping and storage cost doesn’t fluctuate by the week; it would logically remain pretty static. The same official even admits she doesn’t want to throw out the first number in the “negotiation” because the first offer always loses. This is clearly not a discussion about shipping costs but rather a negotiation, in the doctor’s own words.
Democrats in Washington are trustworthy on this subject; they are looking out for you!
The Democrats in Washington are firmly planted in the pocket of Planned Parenthood to the tune of millions of dollars a year, that we know of. Almost all the Democrats that have given the American public the “move along, nothing to see here” routine received money from Planned Parenthood’s massive political slush fund over the last few years.
Elizabeth Warren took to the Senate floor on Monday and launched into a strange speech about cancer screenings, Thanksgiving dinners, Facebook and a host of other issues semi-related to Planned Parenthood but completely unrelated to the content of the videos in question. It was truly an outrageous and frankly pathetic attack against anyone who thinks that harvesting the dead bodies of infants should not be taxpayer funded. Warren went as far as to say that the effort to defund Planned Parenthood is a “deliberate, methodical, orchestrated, right-wing attack, on women’s rights.” This egregious statement is not only beneath the office of United States senator, it’s wrong. It labels anyone who opposes the abhorrent things in this video, as someone who doesn’t care about whether women live or die. That’s outrageous. Not to mention, the fact that the Democratic Senatorial Committee, which is directly tied to Elizabeth Warren, is on Planned Parenthood’s payroll. Conflict of interest much?
Many top Democrats are so far removed from this issue that they aren’t even watching the videos. And they are admitting it. Sen. Jeanee Shaheen, D-N.H., who received money from Planned Parenthood, admitted this week she hasn’t bothered to watch the video, but knows it’s not accurate to the point where she voted to retain government funding. White House press secretary Josh Earnest hasn’t watched the video, but knows Planned Parenthood shouldn’t lose funding. And yes, the man he speaks for, President Obama, has received plenty of money from Planned Parenthood. It’s almost laughable how beholden Democrat politicians are to this organization which is clearly a fundraising arm of the Democratic Party.
Bottom line: The majority of the politicians in Washington that are claiming this controversy is nothing more than a Republican hit job, have either accepted money from Planned Parenthood, not watched the video or both.
Defunding Planned Parenthood will leave women with nowhere to go.
This is perhaps the most puzzling argument Planned Parenthood has tried to make. First of all, Republican opponents from the beginning have not been trying to cut the money that goes to Planned Parenthood from the budget entirely, but rather re-allocate the funding to the 9,000 health centers across the country that provide the same services, minus abortion. These health centers outnumber Planned Parenthood 10 to 1 and do everything PP does, except abortions and organ harvesting.
Planned Parenthood doesn’t disappear without federal funding. The too big to fail argument that the left has adopted doesn’t hold any water. All the services that Elizabeth Warren carried on and on about on the Senate floor can still be available to women at health centers, clinics and Planned Parenthood, provided it figures out a way to make its budget balance with private money like every other non-profit organization in America. It may seem like a lot of money, but its almost asinine to think that Planned Parenthood couldn’t come up with $500 million dollars from a large group of powerful donors, their friends in Washington, or, heaven forbid, cut costs. Many other non-profits operate with billion-dollar budgets without government dependence. It can too.
Would it be difficult to cut Planned Parenthood funding? Of course, but many things in this world are hard and the fact that PP has ballooned to an unmanageable size should not excuse it for consistently breaking the law. Even if Planned Parenthood funding were cut today, and it can’t be until the fall, as Congress will be on recess, anyone who knows how Washington works knows that the checks could keep flowing for a reasonable amount of time until PP was able to start operating like a normal non-profit. It is simply dishonest to pretend that Planned Parenthood can’t exist without the government.
The reality of the situation is that without Planned Parenthood, there is a plethora of options still remaining for women seeking birth control, pap smears, cancer screenings if PP were to go out of business, which it wouldn’t. Too big to fail is not a defense against breaking the law.
Most people support the Democrats position of unrestricted abortion
George Will recently commented on this growing story for National Review and brought up an exceptionally important overview of the current position Democrats hold on abortion:
“In partial-birth abortion, a near-term baby is pulled by the legs almost out of the birth canal, until the base of the skull is exposed so the abortionist can suck out its contents. During Senate debates on this procedure, three Democrats were asked: Suppose a baby’s head slips out of the birth canal — the baby is born — before the abortionist can kill it. Does the baby then have a right to live? Two of the Democrats refused to answer. The third said the baby acquires a right to life when it leaves the hospital.”
The baby acquires a right to life when it leaves the hospital. That’s the position of prominent members of the Democratic Party. Top Democrats from Debbie Wasserman Schultz to Charles Schumer to Barack Obama have all failed to condemn late-term and partial-birth abortions while in some cases even going so far as to support it vehemently.
Even some top liberal minds in Washington think Democrats are on the wrong side of history in the abortion debate, but the polls overwhelmingly demonstrate they are on the wrong side of public opinion. Almost all major polling shows that Americans do not support partial-birth abortions — the main issue that is bothering people about these tapes. The polls show that less than 50 percent of the country wants to keep funding Planned Parenthood. It is important to remember this controversy is a couple weeks old, the investigation is not complete, and the media along with Planned Parenthood have launched a massive misinformation campaign to sway public opinion.
The polling, at about 49 percent in favor of continuing to fund and 51 percent either not caring or saying no, is sure to change even more as the Center for Medical Progress promises to continue to release more videos and investigations continue to progress. In the last 24 hours, one state has already decided to strip Planned Parenthood of funding.
Abortion accounts for only 3 percent of what Planned Parenthood does
This is carelessly misleading. PP is responsible for 30 percent of the abortions in this country, about 330,000 per year, and don’t forget, easing them off of federal funding is not the same as shutting them down for good. They provide as many abortions as they do pap smears, and only slightly less than breast care services (which is not the same as mammograms, they perform zero of those per year). Abortion is a huge part of what they do, if not the biggest, but they come up with this 3 percent number by equating every single service they provide as one thing. For example, handing out one pack of birth control is the same as an abortion, so while they may hand out millions of packs of birth control, this makes it seem like 300,000 abortions are a drop in the bucket. It’s extremely deceiving, and they know that.
Also, if abortion is really only 3 percent of what they do, why wouldn’t they drop the 3 percent tomorrow in good faith and send that small fraction of patients to safe and reputable abortion clinics. That way they could keep all their funding, repair their image, and continue doing all the amazing things they do with the other 97 percent. Of course that would never happen because of ideology and the undeniable truth that abortion is their bread and butter.
Planned Parenthood does a lot of good things. Everyone knows that. To ramble on and on about cancer screenings and STD tests completely misses the point. There is a lot we don’t know yet about what is going on behind the scenes at Planned Parenthood, but there is more than enough evidence to warrant a full investigation and a strong case to be made for defunding the organization entirely. The public trust is not there, and that is a fundamental requirement to earn the public’s funds. This current controversy doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface on the multitude of ways that PP has failed to earn taxpayer confidence like knowingly not reporting child rape and fraudulently billing the government.
These five areas where Planned Parenthood have played fast and loose with the truth don’t even begin to fill out the complete list of reasons why it does not deserve taxpayer money.Click here for reuse options!
