WASHINGTON: Former sports announcer, Lt. Governor of Texas, Dan Patrick (R) has decided that his historical acumen can bring Texas forward into the truly modern way of thinking. Patrick’s view, it seems, is that the South is and always had been a bunch of ignorant savages. However, under his guidance, no more.
Nate Cohn at the New Republic doesn’t think Texas is going Democratic in presidential elections any time soon, even if “comprehensive immigration reform” passes. He sees 2036 as the earliest the Lone Star State might turn blue with or without amnesty: “About 1.4 million illegal immigrants live in Texas, but not all will become citizens. Only about half a million will, assuming the rate matches that of the 1986 immigration-reform bill. Of those, only 300,000 or so will turn out to vote—hardly making an impact.”
The only scenario Cohn envisions in which a blue Texas emerges sooner—by 2024—is one in which the Democrats field “a presidential candidate who could do as well with white voters as President Obama did in 2008,” and that kind of nominee “would be on his or her way to a national landslide, in which case Texas’s electoral votes would be gravy, not a cornerstone of victory.” – The American Conservative
And that man may be Robert “Beto” O’Rourke.
Lt. Gov. Patrick pulling Governor Greg Abbot by the political lapels
In Texas, the Lt. Governor is the most powerful office in the state. That office is where most of the blame for this non-conservative nonsense lies. Governor Greg Abbott, with Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, are driving conservatives away. From the Dalla News Dan Patrick is giving conservatism a bad name in Texas:
“People like Trump and Patrick have given conservatism a bad name — at a time, by the way, when steadily fewer Texans identify themselves as conservatives. For more than two decades it’s been true that more Texans identify themselves as conservatives rather than liberals; but many identify as independents. And yes, the right-wing turns out to vote in its primary and the general election, needing to generate only a couple of million votes to maintain its kind in power. But that margin eroded in 2016, when Trump registered only a single-digit victory in Texas. Hundreds of thousands of new voters are registering.:”
And one way to change Texas’s political history, turn Texas blue, is to start eroding Texas’ conservative history.
Recently both Abbott and Patrick have decided on going politically expedient regarding a plaque in the state capitol building, put up in 1959. And removed in January 2019. (Texas set to take Confederate plaque from state Capitol)
“The Creed of the Children of the Confederacy.
“Because we desire to perpetuate in love and honor the heroic deed of those who enlisted in the Confederate services and upheld its flag for four years of war, we the children of the South have united in an organization called the Children of the Confederacy in which our strength enthusiasm and love of justice can exert its influence. We, therefore pledge ourselves to preserve pure ideals; to honor the memory of our beloved Veterans; to study and teach the truths of history (one of the most important, which is, that the War Between the States was not a rebellion, nor was the underlying cause to sustain slavery) and always to act in a manner that will reflect honor on our noble and patriotic ancestors.”
Those are the words of conservatism.
And not one of them is inflammatory. It says “we remember.”
Do Patrick and Abbott want Texans to forget their conservative roots? The complaint about the plaque is that it says slavery was not the underlying cause of the Civil War and that the South, in its secession, did not rebel. Both reasonable positions.
Just maybe not for a state house.
And there are Texans who agree with the plaque. They just wanted a different government then, and they may be looking for a new government now.
But is that the government of Ted Cruz and principled conservatism? Of the RNC or the DNC? Of Beto?
Texas means conservative
The constant popular notion that the South and its conservative heart are evil racists who hated the country and hated blacks is the driving force behind the so-called red state changing color. It isn’t a result of children like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or hustlers like Bernie Sanders and Al Sharpton.
However, it is the timid moderates like the Dan Patricks and Greg Abbotts and their kissing cousins the Neocon Bushes, Cheneys, Mark Levins and Victor Davis Hansons who will force Texas to turn purple—then blue. Putting Texas conservatives on the endangered list.
Governor Abbott and Lt Governor Patrick be careful. You are going to have a Beto bomb explode. And in order to keep Texas conservative, you need to lead now with strong conservative principals that have long been the hallmark of the Lone Star State.
