COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., April 1, 2016 – For those who are political junkies, watching the current machinations of the GOP and Democratic primaries is as nerve-wracking as it is eye-opening. On the GOP side, rumors of secret meetings and “fixing” delegates run rampant. On the Democratic side, thousands turn out for Bernie Sanders while Hillary Clinton’s events are sparsely attended, yet she’s “winning” anyway.
There is an interesting meaning of the word “apocalypse”: “Revelation.” Many Bible readers insist that we are now in the “end times.” In those times, as described in the Book of Revelation, all that’s been hidden will be revealed.
Consider the current election process. Americans have long been proud of our democratic process. “We aren’t some banana republic,” we say with confidence. “We vote.” “Our power transitions are peaceful.” There was that little matter of the Chicago Democratic Convention way back when. But that was then, in the wake of Vietnam, and this is now, with cell phones and the Kardashians.
“We’ve come a long way, baby.”
Or, have we?
Just when we were coming out of an era of political scandal atop political scandal, several candidates emerged as citizens to help us clean up the mess that is Washington. Never mind the empty promises, the pay-offs, and ‘business as usual.’ Bernie Sanders, Ben Carson, and Donald Trump have arrived to help us take back our country. The proof of our readiness to do just that may be seen in the thousands who flock to crowded arenas to show their support for these men.
But . . . not so fast, citizens of the land of the free, home of the brave. As we happily cast our votes, the lawyers and political operatives of the Establishment are reviewing the convention rules and reaching out to delegates, party gifts in hand. On the Republican side, first they throw Big Money at defeating Donald Trump in Wisconsin and elsewhere.
Next, they co-opt delegates so that they are in their pockets for the critical floor votes. Lawyers review state delegate laws with a view to further legal machinations, interpretations of ‘what the meaning of is, is,’ and like-minded skullduggeries to overcome ‘The Donald.’
What on earth the Democrats will do about that pesky Sanders is anyone’s guess. Liberals practically own picketing, civil unrest and bringing a gun if “they” bring a knife. That long-standing tradition of union thugs, Black Panthers at polling places and the like may yet backfire on them. Democrats may come to rue the day they encouraged civil violence to make their point.
Which brings us full circle to the spectre of our democracy’s once more being stolen out from under us. The ground under our feet is anything but steady. And voters on both sides have about had it with the men in suits, come to feather their beds at our expense.
Perhaps the Establishment, in the end, will win, on both sides. Hillary Clinton will emerge triumphant in yet another pants suit – will it be chartreuse this time? And the GOP Establishment will succeed in getting their brokered convention. As they like to say, perhaps the GOP presidential candidate will be no one anyone expects.
Well . . . that’s for sure!
