Sochi is safe: Putin is in charge

LOS ANGELES, February 6, 2014—Westerners complain about poor accommodations. The threat of terrorism hangs in the air. The weather is too cold even though cold weather sports are played in the cold weather.

Players will suffer injuries. Foreigners from all over the globe speaking so many dialects make it difficult to ask for directions or engage in any helpful verbal communication.

Enough about Super Bowl XLVIII, let’s talk about Mother Russia.

The Sochi Olympics are being described as the most dangerous place on Earth … outside of Detroit. Fears of terrorism have many travelers worried that this could turn out to be another Munich where Palestinian terrorists murdered Jewish athletes at the 1972  Olympics in Germany.

Russia has been dealing with radical Islamists as well, mainly separatists from Chechnya. Add to the mix the always-volatile garden variety Islamists from Iran and Gaza, and there is always the possibility of death on a massive scale.

Not always. Not this time.

The Sochi Olympics will be 100% safe.

Those rubbing their eyes in disbelief should remember who is in charge of the 2014 games.

Vladimir Putin is not Barack Obama. If terrorists embarrass Putin he will scorch their entire Earth and not worry about collateral damage.

In Western democracies, criminals and terrorists have the advantage because law enforcement officials are, by definition, constrained by the law. In a dictatorship, the law is whatever the dictator says it is. If Obama were to threaten to jail dissidents, Americans would laugh and ask “You and what army?”

Nobody makes that joke about Putin.

Putin is a cold-blooded, black-iced-hearted KGB operative. He is a ruthless assassin who shoots first and asks questions never. He can get to anybody, any place, any time, and everybody knows it.

When terrorists took over a Russian school, Putin warned them that he would kill them all if they did not surrender. The terrorists calculated that nobody would storm a building with children being held hostage. In the biggest miscalculation not affiliated with climate change models, Putin allowed a few hundred schoolchildren to be killed just to take down some terrorists.

He does not bluff. The terrorists know this.

Putin’s Russia now has the eyes of the world on it. If anything goes wrong at these Olympics, Putin will be personally humiliated. Does anybody think that would be the end of the story rather than the beginning?

This is the one time terrorists dare not cross the line. Anybody screwing up Putin’s Olympics is a dead man walking. It is one thing for Chechen Islamists to set off bombs at the Boston Marathon. What do they expect President Obama to do, something?

Putin does not have an ACLU to contend with. In America the Boston bomber will be given a civilian trial. Social justice attorneys will be on hand to make sure that the bomber has Halal-approved meat and beverages with umbrellas in them chilled to a comfortable temperature.

The feelings of the murderer will be carefully monitored.

Putin’s Russia does not work this way. Like Obama, Putin treats anything and anybody who peeves him as an act of war deserving retaliation. The only difference is that with Putin, the opponents are not doubled-over in laughter. The threats are credible.

Obama speaks about “red lines.” Putin enforces them.

The terrorists will conclude that they have everything to lose by testing Putin when he is at his most ruthlessly determined.

The terrorists will take a couple weeks off and go back to blowing stuff up once the global media has left Russia.

Sochi will be fine.
