WASHINGTON, July 1, 2014 – Former president Bill Clinton is viewed very favorably by the majority of Americans. Since leaving office 14 years ago he has done some marvelous things that only an ex-president can do. From his humanitarian actions both here and abroad to the global foundations where he encourages open dialogue and promotes world peace, he is the perfect example of how an ex-president can get things done when no one else can. More than two thirds of Americans currently view him positively.
Still he is far from a saint.
In 1977, President Carter pardoned Bill Clinton for his illegal actions regarding his draft status. That was after the Whitewater scandal and his admission that he smoked marijuana but “didn’t inhale”.
In 1998 Clinton was impeached by a majority vote of the House of Representatives on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. Under oath, he lied about his affair with intern Monica Lewinsky. Although the majority of Senators voted to impeach him, there was not a two thirds majority, and since he declined to resign, he stayed in office.
Then he snookered all of us. He said that because he did not have intercourse with Lewinsky he really didn’t lie. Because he was a likable guy we went along with his explanation even though we knew he was not being forthright.
Slick Willie wiggled out yet again.
Now he is back to help his wife Hillary with her campaign to be president. As the details surrounding the deadly attack in Benghazi Libya on September 11, 2012 are revealed, it is obvious that then Secretary of State Hillary was negligent in her duties to protect those who worker for her and then she simply lied or at least went along with the lie that the attack was triggered by a not very widely viewed video.
When all of the details emerge which will likely happen when the House select committee begins their hearings into the incident and the apparent cover-up, Hillary will probably be exposed as an inept secretary of state and as a key player in the cover up. In anticipation of this, Slick Willie spoke in an attempt to snooker the public yet again.
“When ten different instances occurred when President Bush was in office where American diplomatic personnel were killed in, in – around the world, how many outraged Republican members of Congress were there?” Clinton asked.
It is true there were nine instances where ten people were killed. Not one occurred at an embassy. Some were officers in the military. Some were killed while driving in their car. Some were killed during a suicide bomb attack. None were killed in a large scale terrorist attack on a supposedly protected area. None were ambassadors.
Slick Willie will try to spin the Benghazi attack as something that was not as bad as things president Bush experienced. He will say that Hillary was not at fault. Even though we like Bill and we really want to believe him, we know he is snookering us.
Hillary was in charge and the buck stops with her.
He recently tried to convince us that Hillary is not out of touch and does speak truthfully, even though she said the Clintons was dead broke after leaving the White House. It was subsequently revealed that Bill received a multi-million dollar contract to write a book and so did Hillary. In fact it has been estimated that Hillary and Bill have earned well in excess of $100 million since 2001. This is hardly dead broke.
There are many voters who would like to see a female president. As such they support Hillary Clinton even though they understand that she is really not the best person for the job. For the last two elections we elected the “cool” guy who wasn’t a white male as all previous presidents were, even though Obama had no experience running any enterprise and was really just a great campaigner but severely lacked the leadership consensus building skills needed by a president.
Let’s not make the same mistake with Hillary, no matter what the well-liked slick Willie may say.Click here for reuse options!
