Rick Santorum in black and white: More than the gray of a social conservative

Who is Rick Santorum? He is exactly who he says he is - personally and politically. And he almost took Iowa last time around.

LOS ANGELES, May 27, 2015 — The Republican presidential field grew by one with the addition of former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum to the race. Santorum is expected to immediately become the most misjudged and misunderstood candidate.

When people think of Rick Santorum, the first and only thing they focus on is his social conservatism. Liberals label him a mean-spirited extremist wacko who spreads fear and hate. This how liberals describe proud social conservatives, so that criticism can be shrugged off. When one believes the far left is the center, it makes sense to them that anyone socially conservative would be scary.

Santorum is a deeply religious Catholic. His faith is why he opposes abortion and gay marriage. He does not hate gays, nor is there any evidence that he has ever discriminated in terms of his hiring his staff. Many craven liberal politicians switched their positions on gay marriage between 2011 and 2013. They shifted with the political winds. Santorum stood firm on his principles. As for abortion, the beautiful miracle that is his young daughter Bella is what guides him.

The 2016 Presidency may hinge on smart use of the Smartphone

In an act of real recklessly stupid intolerance, Santorum was glitter-bombed in South Carolina. At his campaign rally at the Citadel, a loud bang went off. Gay rights activists thought it would be funny to have a canister explode and spread glitter all over Santorum.

Santorum often receives death threats. Normal people should condemn sending the Secret Service into red alert mode in a crowded room.

The gay rights activists engaged in asinine and dangerous behavior masquerading as political speech. True hate can be found in Santorum’s harshest detractors.

One does not have to agree with Santorum’s views to respect his consistency and integrity. Santorum can be trusted. When he gives his word, he keeps it. In a world of cynical politicians who consistently govern the opposite of how they campaigned, Santorum has remained a conservative stalwart.

The criticism of Santorum does not come only from the left. Many Republicans assume he is a niche candidate with zero chance of winning the nomination. This analysis could not be more wrong. Those who underestimate Santorum must have been asleep during the 2012 GOP primaries.

He started out at around 3 percent in the polls. Then this coal miner’s son took his story to all 99 counties in Iowa. Winning the Iowa caucus should not be understated, but it should also not be overstated. Social conservatives win Iowa. What really should impress people is that Santorum came very close to winning the nomination. Had Newt Gingrich dropped out, Santorum would have had more votes than Mitt Romney.

The biggest misperception of Rick Santorum is that he is just a social conservative. This is factually false.

Santorum is a foreign policy hawk who categorically rejects the growing isolationist strain in the Grand Old Party. Santorum is a staunch supporter of Israel and is willing to take a necessary hard line on Iran. Unlike blank slate presidential candidates, Santorum has a Senate voting record to back up his claims. He has taken the lead on tough sanctions against Iran and is willing to use force against Iran if necessary. He cautioned that the Russian reset would fail, and he was right. On issue after issue, Santorum has been proven right.

For George W. Bush the role of Commander in Chief continues

On economic issues, Santorum favors supply-side tax cuts in the mold of Ronald Reagan and Jack Kemp. He has been criticized by some conservatives for voting to increase spending, but often his choices were between a bad bill and a worse bill. Santorum has voted responsibly on most economic issues.

The 2016 GOP field is far more wide and deep than the 2012 group. Santorum once again is seen as an afterthought. Once again, Santorum aims to surprise us all.

Whatever one thinks on any particular issue, it is safe to say that he should be taken seriously as a candidate. Social issues tend to take a back seat when the economy is miserable and the world is on fire.

Rick Santorum is a serious individual who sticks to his core principles and beliefs. He is consistent and trustworthy. Given what Americans have suffered through with politicians in recent years, Rick Santorum is a vast improvement. For those who care about more than just social issues, welcome to the club. So does Rick Santorum.

What a refreshingly honest write up about Rick Santorum! He is indeed the most underestimated candidate in the 2016 field and it’s been his lot in all the races he has had during his political life. Despite the fact he has the 6th highest state and vote tally in political history for a runner up to his party’s nomination and almost took out the billionaire fueled Romney while running a shoestring campaign with meager funds and a skeletal staff, he is treated by media like he doesn’t exist.

Santorum was the “dragonslayer” of 2012, dismantling all his opponents on issues without ever going personal. The establishment bosses and donors and their media arm at Fox News have made it their main goal to not only keep Santorum off their most watched shows during primetime but also not talk about him at all in their 2016 discussions. On the rare occasion his name does come up, the hosts or elitist pundits literally drip with scorn and disdain while marginalizing him as a has been or non issue for 2016. If viewers can’t see or hear him and his message, specifically on Fox News, the power players manipulating the political process can keep Santorum’s poll numbers down enough to keep him off the debate stage and also negatively influence his ability to raise funds. You are seeing this very thing happening right now.

Santorum overcame this same problem in 2011 and 2012 and came doggone close to taking the pre selected Romney out. He did, however, have the opportunity to be seen and heard to some degree in the televised debates and he was beyond impressive. This time the establishment is taking no chances for that to happen. I say Godspeed to Rick Santorum, the ultimate underdog in this David vs Goliath scenario for 2016. There is no better man for the job in my lifetime of presidential races.
