WASHINGTON, January 11, 2018: Looking with despair upon the architectural renderings of a newly proposed gash in Chicago’s urban landscape, troubled, over-taxed denizens of the Windy City can be forgiven for believing the drawings before them depict an ancient Aztec temple rising above their urban jungle. The Aztecs, of course, built temples to appease their powerful and terrifying gods. What we are discussing here is the Ozymandian monstrosity that is to be the new Obama Presidential Library.
These newly revealed drawings depicting the proposed complex seem intended in advance to celebrate the Celestial Being upon whose behalf the Windy City’s newest stone shrine will arise: former President Barack Obama.
This new Obama Presidential Library – a monument to his already supersized ego – will not only obliterate a cherished public park. It will remove a chunk of prime Chicago real estate from the city’s tax rolls as well.
“A monolithic tower and a self-contained campus are not appropriate in the National Register-designated picturesque [park] design by [Frederick] Olmsted and Vaux,” says Charles Birnbaum with the Cultural Landscape Foundation. It will require significant funding from that city’s already beleaguered taxpayers to re-route and reconstruct roads and transportation to provide access to the huge site.”
The former president thought his godlike reputation in the city where he first rose to political prominence was more than sufficient to assure he would have no trouble finding sacrificial victims (Chicago taxpayers) to fund his ego palace. But it seems that this city, already renowned throughout the world for its epic political shakedowns, doesn’t really care if the nation’s first black president wants to build a library in their town. Their tax burden is already among the most ruinous in the nation.
As for Obama’s past achievements and local associations, they mean little to hard-nosed Chicagoans who are known to routinely ask, “What have you done for me lately?” Or, “What’s in it for me?”
Ironically, the most pointed criticism of the Obama Presidential Library complex appears in a letter from the University of Chicago’s predominantly left-wing faculty. Among other things, this missive complains that the proposed library’s multi-story parking garage displaces historic parks and also
“… privileges cars and those who can afford them. Parking is expensive, and though public lands are being given away, all the profits from this parking lot will go to the Obama Foundation. None of the funds will go back to the City to improve train lines and public transportation infrastructure. Over all, this is a socially regressive plan.”
Translation: “We aren’t impressed you gave U.S. Navy Seals the order to hunt down and kill Osama bin Laden. What’s important is that your library’s revenue stream be redirected to line the pockets of shiftless university types like us.”
That’s right, Mr. Obama, you’re out of power. Now you’re just another rich, privileged “regressive.”
In the process of Spain’s conquest of Mexico, it’s said the legendary Aztec emperor Montezuma became alarmed during a conversation with chief conquistador, Hernando Cortes. The topic of the day was Christianity. Cortes had just explained the Roman Catholic consecration of the Holy Eucharist to Montezuma, insisting that by eating the sacred wafer, a person was actually eating the flesh of Christ.
Montezuma was horrified. In his world, the gods eat you. Kind of like Chicago politicians and cognoscenti devour their constituents. Perhaps ex-president Obama should reconsider where he builds his presidential Temple of Gloom. Perhaps Hawaii. Maybe even Kenya.
Having worked so hard as a community organizer to make the Windy City what it is today, it’s surprising Obama is shocked to find, as Charles Merriam once observed:
“Chicago is unique. It is the only completely corrupt city in America.”
