WASHINGTON. Why can’t the Federal government get creative for a change, particularly when it comes to the current budget impasse? For example, how about employing a caravan of illegal immigrants as non-essential Federal workers? Follow us here. Furloughed Federal employees have got to be getting really nervous. These non-essential Federal workers are already several weeks into a partial government shutdown and there seems to be no end in sight.
Life goes on for non-essential Federal workers. And vacationing Democrats
What makes things even worse is that America seems to be doing just fine without them. And Washington’s congressional Democrats flew their pasty white bodies far from snowy Washington and down to sunnier climes, the better to experience the warm beaches and balmy sea breezes of Puerto Rico. Many have tickets to see Lin-Manuel Miranda sing and dance in his musical “Hamilton” – a kinetic, hip-hop paean to big, debt-ridden government.
But like Hamilton’s nemesis Aaron Burr, President Trump is shooting down the notion that America is lost without the cuddles and castigations from their masters in D.C. And when you are a Federal employee designated a non-essential appendage of the federal Leviathan, people in fly-over country may start to think that doing without you should be, well, made permanent. That could happen if we employed some of those illegal immigrants we’re already supporting as non-essential Federal workers instead.
At the president’s discretion
As the chief administrator of all Federal agencies, President Trump has used his executive discretion to determine which agencies continue operating and which do not.
In 2011, President Obama ordered the US Treasury Department closed so as not to pay Americans their federal refunds until tangential congressional Republicans caved and passed a budget. Which, of course, they did.
But Trump has ordered the IRS to stay open and prepare to hand out tax refunds to over-taxed citizens. The ones who pay exorbitantly for the thousands of non-essential Federal seat warmers. Which, alas, likely includes those Democrats happily vacationing in Puerto Rico as well.
A new, inexpensive Federal labor pool?
But what if Trump, as part of his “national emergency,” takes a few thousand illegal immigrants now in taxpayer-funded holding facilities. Then gives them the bare minimum of training. And then, lets them work off their asylum and government benefits as reserve non-essential Federal employees? Now there’s an idea.
As they already do in the private sector, Uncle Sam’s low-wage illegal workers will quickly help drive down government costs. At the same time, they’ll depress notoriously inflated public sector wages. The logic is impeccable. And because of that, the Democrats would fund Trump’s border wall in a New York minute rather than deal with the new reality. That’s because angry, unionized Federal non-essentials would withhold political contributions to Democrats in retaliation over endorsing the hiring of illegal, scab non-essentials.
It’s just a thought.
