TRENTON, NEW JERSEY: A number of things stand out in the polls in the Menendez (D) – Hugin (R) race for Congress. For instance, Menendez polls poorly among “Southern Democrats.” Hugin, nevertheless. has complete Republican support and considerably most of the Caucasian support. At least according to the numbers. Leaving Menendez Urban Democrats in the northern half of the state to garner enough support to cobble together whatever momentum he still has left. Particularly after losing his rating among the New Jersey electorate.
Bob Menendez one-sided love affair with cash
Menendez love for the cash negatively impacted his relation`ship with a huge majority of New Jersey voters. American are generous. (The extraordinary generosity of ordinary Americans – The Globe). Globe Journalist Jeff Jacoby writes:
The scope of American philanthropy is unparalleled anywhere on Earth. In 2014, Americans gave nearly $360 billion to charity, the highest total ever recorded. Most of it didn’t come from plutocrats and vast charitable endowments. Though the good works of private foundations, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation or the Ford Foundation, draw plenty of notice, they account for only 14 percent of charitable giving in this country. And just 5 percent comes from corporations.
The overwhelming share of that $360 billion is donated by individuals.
It is breathtaking to watch people like the Gates handle public policy with such an adept understanding of global development perspectives. American appreciate the philanthropic individual and want to do their share. Hence the wide variety of pleas for charitable support in manageable amounts, such as Shriner’s Hospital “Love to the Rescue” campaign asking for re-occurring donations of $19 per month. This small donation pledge is used by a variety of groups – from animal welfare to saving our oceans, from children to the elderly.
Even political campaigns.
At the 2016 White House correspondent’s dinner President Obama noted:
“What an election season. For example, we’ve got the bright new face of the Democratic Party here tonight –- Mr. Bernie Sanders! There he is — Bernie! Bernie, you look like a million bucks. Or to put it in terms you’ll understand, you look like 37,000 donations of 27 dollars each!”
American’s who want to be philanthropic choose to donate $360 billion dollars, much of it in small donations. The only reason for this generosity it makes us feels good to do good. Menendez was charged under federal bribery law. The question was whether or not Menendez performed “official acts. And in doing so, did he pressure officials to help Florida ophthalmologist, friend, and political supporter, Dr. Salomon Melgen.
The corruption case ended in a mistrial, not offering a clear yes or no as to whether the Senator is guilty. (Corruption Case Against Senator Menendez Ends in Mistrial). Nonetheless, for many it was not whether Menendez was guilty under the law, it is that he took, when he should have been giving,
Hugin appeals to all the racial and social classes.
Bob Hugin, not having the taint of the corruption trial, may help many conclude that voting for the republican is the better choice. Those voters include Bernie Sanders supporter, independents and disenfranchised democrats.
The idea of corruption, misappropriation of funds, may not equal high crimes like treason, however, it may affect the election. Voters may still see a clear connection between Menendez and Dr. Meglen. Meglen was convicted of Medicare fraud.
The superseding tone in the Republican agenda is to wipe out the bloated government and Menendez flies in the face of that. When he decided to run, Menendez underestimated Hugin’s capability within his own electorate, including his ability to sway the minds of voters. And the corruption taint may very well work against Menendez.
