CHARLOTTE, N.C. When Barack Obama left office, I turned off my remote and went into hiding. After years of being a news junkie, I had simply had enough of the garbage emanating through the airwaves into my den. In today’s America, lies, smears and deceit spouted endlessly by dishonest talking heads have become the intellectual currency of the realm. Perhaps, worst of all, the continuous redundancy on both side of every issue is enough to make my head spin. It has all became entirely too much to bear.
Let’s face it.
Lies, smears and deceit: Our dysfunctional government
Now, halfway through President Trump’s first term, the Democrats are still licking their 2016 wounds. 24/7, they desperately pursue everything possible to oust the man who took away their power and take control of Congress so they can throw him out. Some of this may have a modicum of merit. But most of it has verged on the ridiculous, evolving into a serious, pathological case of sour grapes gone off the edge. Evidence: the nonstop lies, smears and deceit meant to sustain anger over reason and, perhaps, destroy our government and way of life in the process.
On the other side, even some pro-Trumpers often raise their eyebrows and shake their heads at the president’s governing style. Not to mention his now famous signature Tweets.
Ignore the real news to keep a fake scandal at the top of the headlines
Forget that the president attempted to hold a press conference to announce his landmark legislation. All the media wanted Monday was to fire off insulting or trivial questions about the Democrat-instigated Kavanaugh controversy. More opportunities to pursue the lies, smears and deceit that sustain their negative false narratives of the current presidency.
To his credit, Trump scolded his journalistic enemies, stating he would respond after answering questions about the trade deal, which he did.
It’s not a news industry. It’s an entertainment industry
It is certainly understandable that rape is much more eyeball-grabbingly salacious than a trade agreement that most people cannot understand. In other words, the topic sells more commercials than usual on cable TV “news” programs. A vast array of news and topics are demonstrably more important than the latest, often manufactured American scandals.
Today’s “news” is indistinguishable from episodes of the old Jerry Springer Show.
Lies, smears and deceit – It’s a three-ring circus
Throughout the day, the evening and on into the night of each news cycle, so long as this ridiculous and largely irrelevant media circus continues, so, too, will the parade of redundant questions and answers, the fake news stories highlighting unsubstantiated claims, and the insanely nasty street theater stunts that erupt between and among our nation’s lawmakers.
Ringling Brothers’ Big Top is now an anachronism. But the three-ring circus in Washington – one each for lies, smears and deceit – is eternal.
Rules? Collegiality? The U.S. Senate no longer knows what that means
Face it. Regarding this week’s edition of the never-ending “Kavanaugh Scandal,” the Democrats never had any intention of playing by their own agreed-upon rules. Rules that allowed the FBI to further investigate Kavanaugh in a reasonable period of time. That was merely the “talking point” of the hour last week. The real idea, as it has always been, is to buy enough time to establish new rules and raise doubts and keep delaying a vote on the Kavanaugh nomination.
Subseqently, the Republicans took the bait hook, line and sinker because they had to. That was due in large part to the weak-kneed (and outgoing) Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and his fellow RINOs from Maine and Alaska. Whatever happened to political courage in this century?
Clearly, nothing will ever satisfy the power hungry Democrats save for complete control of the universe. But they live in fear of losing even more political control with the potential confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to Justice Kennedy’s former seat on the Supreme Court.
Worse however, are the historically sleazy methods the Democrats now regularly employ to disqualify nominees that won’t do their dirty work for them. Brett Kavanaugh is only the latest victim of the Democrats’ disgusting and dishonest slash-and-burn attacks. This has been standard operating procedure for them since the Hero of Chappaquiddick destroyed Robert Bork, adding a new verb to the language in the process. And let’s not forget the smearing of now-Justice Clarence Thomas either.
What’s really behind the Democrats’ disgusting lies and political stunts?
You might say that watching this despicable exercise is like watching a train wreck. Except that watching a train wreck would be more entertaining. It is clear today that our country cannot become more polarized than it already is. We can thank our so-called gutless political “leaders” for that. Representative democracy has apparently gone out the window as a result.
Are there any Wise Men left in government?
Each year, the Christmas story tells us of three Wise Men who came to ancient Jerusalem from afar. During periods of time such as we now endure, one has to wonder. As Chrismas once again draws near, is it possible to find even a single “WISE” man in Washington, much less three?
I remember now why I became an avid movie watcher, as opposed to being a viewer of televised sports and politics, following the endless, false political stunts perpetrated by Colin Kaepernick and Barack Obama.
Truthfully, I was much happier not knowing about Comey and the FBI or the real or fake Russian influence on our elections. Or whether Melania Trump wore the proper shoes to a certain event. I just didn’t – and don’t – care. What was the point?
It ain’t over ’til it’s over
Once this shabby charade is over – and it soon will be we can hope – I am promising myself that I will return to my hibernation and take a nice long nap from the dung-slinging spectacle of a now entirely out-of-control Washington.
In so doing, I may end up uninformed. But I’ll be happy.
