LOS ANGELES: As another year comes to a close, very few institutions have been devalued as much as the Fourth Estate. The American media is liked and trusted even less than the people they skewer. Far too many media personalities are more interested in being the news rather than just reporting it.
Walter Cronkite was once “the most trusted man in America.” Chet Huntley and David Brinkley were consummate professionals. Those days are gone.
The media is overwhelmingly liberal to the point of outright advocacy. Unimportant stories are broadcast ad nauseam while vital stories are given short shrift.
The liberal media approaches virtually every story with the same mentality: Cover it in a way that helps Democrats and advances liberalism while harming Republicans and demonizing conservatism. Try finding a single example of a story that does the reverse.
The liberal media obsessively cover nonsense. They frequently cover the least important stories rather than real hard news. Hard news is what actually matters.
With that, here are the top 10 most important news stories of 2018.
10.) Dr. Charles Krauthammer:
He was far more than just some columnist or pundit. When he died on June 21, the world lost one of the brightest minds in the history of civilization. Nobody knows everything, but listening to one speech would have his captivated audience thinking, “maybe this guy does know everything.
Six straight presidents invited him to the White House to hear his opinions on policy matters. He coined the term, “The Reagan Doctrine,” which required every subsequent president to have a defined doctrine.
For four decades, millions of Americans judged policies based on his analysis.
9.) Embassy in Jerusalem:
Every U.S. President made promises to move the American Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Then they sign waivers delaying the move. This game had been going on for over two decades.
President Donald Trump not playing games.
On May 14, he embass moved to Israel where streets are being named after the American President. Presidents had been breaking this promise for so long that the promise itself was dismissed as campaign rhetoric.
Trump kept a major campaign promise, which was as revolutionary as the moving of the embassy itself.
8.) Tree of Life Synagogue shooting:
Mass shootings have been far too prevalent in recent years, but the October 27 shooting in the Pittsburgh suburb of Squirrel Hill was different. The media wanted to portray it as an epidemic of violence against Jews, but the exact opposite was true.
What made the shooting so shocking was that it was the first time this had ever happened in a synagogue in American history. Church shootings have happened. Black churches, in particular, suffering horrible shootings and burnings.
An old evil becomes new again
Jews saw a dose of evil in America that had previously been confined to other continents and other communities. Yet the aftermath must be part of the narrative.
Americans of all stripes rallied in support of Jews everywhere. Christians contacted Jews from Los Angeles to Florida to see if they were safe. Muslims condemned the shooting.
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin lives within walking distance of the synagogue. His mostly non-Jewish football players embraced the community. Far from being marginalized, Jews were told loudly and clearly that non-Jews in America would demand their safety.
7.) Leftist violence Part I: The “Women’s” March:
The Women’s March had nothing to do with women. It was a leftist march, but that is a less effective public relations marketing tool. The purpose of the march, like all leftist marches, was to attack conservatives and Republicans.
Like most leftist marches, this one also attacked Jews and gays, even though most Jews and gays are politically liberal. The real story is that the media knew from the very beginning about the rotten history of this new organization.
They knew that Women’s March founders Linda Sarsour and Tamika Mallory trafficked in hatred of Jews and gays. Both Sarsour and Mallory are Islamists with strong emotional ties to Louis Farrakhan. The media suppressed this because attacking President Trump is more important.
The ends justified the means. Thus, allowing a Jew-hating organization to flourish.
6.) California fires:
For the second year in a row, deadly fires destroyed large swaths of California. Previously safe areas of Los Angeles burned to the ground in a flash. The destruction was devastating and frightening. What the media refused to report is that much of the carnage was avoidable.
Leftist environmental policies ban homeowners from conducting what are known as controlled burns. The government thought it knew more about how to clear brush than local homeowners protecting their own homes did.
Governor Brown admits error
This liberal arrogance was exposed without fanfare when outgoing California Governor Jerry Brown began discussing repealing the burn laws. When someone as far to the left as Governor Moonbeam admits the truth, the media should take notice. They didn’t, choosing to ignore the story that contradicted their ideological narrative.
The Camp Fire alone killed at least 86 people. Innocent people died not because of mother nature’s wrath, but daddy big government’s incompetence.
5.) Caravan of illegals:
On March 25 and October 12, two different caravans of illegal aliens tried to force their way onto American soil. They were funded by leftists and encouraged by the American left.
The liberal media bent over backward to depict those wanting border security as racists and law-breakers as victims. President Trump for the death of two illegal immigrant children . Those who truly care about children demanded that the parents be arrested for reckless endangerment. That never occurred to a media engulfed by the idea that the ends justify the means.
The other question not being asked is, whatever killed these children, could it become an epidemic in America?
Most people who try to enter America illegally are good people looking for a better life. That truthful but completely irrelevant statement is used to whitewash the actual violent crimes caused by bad illegal immigrant.
All lives do not matter.
On December 26, an illegal immigrant murdered a police officer who was a legal immigrant himself. That police officer leaves behind a young child, but do not expect that child to receive the same media sympathy. After all, if it counters the liberal media narrative, the media suppresses it.
Illegal immigrants matter more than dead Americans for one reason. The entire immigration debate is about hard power and votes. Flooding America with illegal aliens ensures that Democrats will win elections in perpetuity and end the Republican party and conservatism.
Since the American electorate keeps rejecting progressive policies, Democrats have only two choices. They will never change their policies, so they have to change the electorate. If innocent people die, so be it.
4.) Leftist violence Part II:
The #MeToo movement began with Harvey Weinstein being caught. Yet it thrived under the liberal hope that it would finally be the thing that brought down Donald Trump. Yet a funny (in a bad way) thing happened on the way to attacking a Republican president for being a Republican.
The biggest so-called champions of women were violent abusers of women. Both parties had figures who faced allegations. Both vehemently denied them. On the right, Judges Roy Moore and Brett Kavanaugh, as well as Trump, face unproven allegations. On the left, actors Dustin Hoffman and Jeffrey Tambor were among several people who vigorously denied allegations against them.
Guilt on the right while ignoring the left
While accusations were bipartisan, proof of guilt leaned heavily toward one side. The worst of the offenders – Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose are all liberals.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D) physically beat up his girlfriend.
Minnesota Senator Al Franken (D) sexually assaulted a woman while she was sleeping. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D), a progressive darling who used his office to harass Trump, physically assaulted multiple women.
The liberal media desperately wants violence toward women to be bipartisan. The evidence suggests otherwise for one simple reason. Liberals are far more likely to get away with bad behavior. People with nothing to fear behave as if they have nothing to fear.
To keep up this myth of bipartisan assault, the liberal media deliberately conflates men who are accused with the men who are proven guilty.
3.) 2018 Midterm elections:
For two years, Americans were told that a blue wave was coming. Democrats were going to sweep the midterm elections and issue a stinging rebuke to President Trump. The reality on November 6 was quite different.
Democrats did capture the House by a much smaller margin than Republicans did in 1994 against President Bill Clinton and 2010 against President Barack Obama. That was it for them. Republicans actually gained Senate seats, a virtually unheard of the midterm result.
Presidents are normally toxic in midterm elections.
Candidates on the stump will do private fundraisers but no public appearances. In 2018, Republican candidates throughout the country were begging Trump to campaign with them. His midterm rallies were as powerful and largely attended as his 2016 presidential rallies.
The media ignored this anomaly and one other issue they could not stomach reporting.
In every race where Trump and Obama directly campaigned for competing candidates, Trump won and Obama lost.
The Florida Senate race and the Florida and Georgia gubernatorial races all tipped Republican because of Trump. Rallies he held in Missouri and Tennessee helped break open close races. Liberal Montana Senator Jon Tester kept verbally hugging Trump, pretending to be a Republican Trump supporter. Embracing Trump helped Tester save his own job. It kills liberals to admit this, but in 2018 Trump was a relevant asset on the campaign trail and Obama was at best irrelevant.
2.) Mattis retires:
Administration officials come and go. No one is indispensable.
For many Americans, Defense Secretary James “Mad Dog” Mattis was as close as it gets. On December 19, President Trump announced his intention to withdraw all American troops from Syria.
One day later, Secretary Mattis announced his resignation. (Remember When Three of Obama’s Former Secretaries of Defense Blasted Him?)
Once again, the liberal media portrayed this as a noble military man unable to cope with an imbecilic Republican president.
The truth is far more complex.
Trump was never a Neocon. His foreign policy was always closer to the Ron Paul wing of the GOP that has become ascendant in recent years. Republicans disagree on whether Trump’s decision is good policy. But bringing troops home is a campaign promise. He kept that promise.
Democrats have spent decades demanding that American troops come home. When a Republican does exactly that, Democrats all of a sudden turn from peaceniks to faux warmongers. Hatred of a Republican leads them to attack a policy they favor and demand a policy they are against.
Moral bankruptcy aside, one major positive did come out of this situation. Mattis stepping down reaffirmed his acceptance of an American military under civilian control. Mattis did not leverage his popularity to seize control of the nation. He stepped down and accepted that a civilian with far less military expertise than him was still his boss.
That uniquely American concept should never be taken for granted.
1.) Justice Brett Kavanaugh:
Judge Kavanaugh was a widely respected conservative intellect who should have been confirmed with the ease that his predecessor Neil Gorsuch was.
For liberals, the right to an abortion superseded everything else. Again, the ends justified the means. Out of nowhere, Kavanaugh faced allegations from multiple women that became more absurd by the day. His main original accuser was a lifelong leftist activist whose baby voice is one no adult should ever imitate.
The layers of this story were multi-fold. Senate Democrats declared that due process did not apply to Kavanaugh because he was not on trial.
He was guilty because they believed his accuser. They believed her because they believed her.
She had no reason to lie unless one counts her million dollars in GoFundMe money and her celebrity status on the left. She will make millions on the speaking circuit.
What made this story different was the ending.
Unlike many Republicans, Kavanaugh vigorously defended himself.
His opening statement was a memo to Republicans everywhere to show a spine. Liberals then attack Kavanaugh for being defensive and angry. As if a man being slandered and libeled should just politely accept the slings innuendo of politicians.
For the billionth time, the liberal media failed to understand what was happening in America. Far from destroying a conservative, the Kavanaugh hearings energized conservatives. Several Democrats in close Senate races lost due to their Kavanaugh vote.
The only Democrat to vote to confirm Kavanaugh was West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin. He survived reelection in his deeply red state.
Senate Democrats came unglued on the campaign trail. Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill railed against “crazy Democrats,” refusing to admit to herself that she was one of them. Her vote against Kavanaugh cost her her job. It was a powerful lesson that conservatives win when they fight and lose when they cower to a liberal media that is rapidly losing influence.
The Kavanaugh hearings are important for one other major reason. Kavanaugh now has a lifetime appointment, and conservatives have a solid conservative judge on the Supreme Court.
On most issues, conservatives have a majority voting bloc. Kavanaugh did more than help Republicans win parts of a midterm election. He will help conservatives for a generation. His impact will be felt long after his accusers end up recanting.
Judge Kavanaugh is easily the top news story of 2018.
