Long Friendship between Harris and Newsom
Newsom has known Harris since her days as district attorney and later attorney general. California will be key to Harris’ attempt to lock down the Democratic nomination for president. She’s been collecting endorsements from high-profile supporters including Rep. Barbara Lee and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta.
Newsom will serve alongside Lee and Huerta as California co-chairs for Harris’ presidential bid. The pair have been intertwined in politics for decades. When Senator Barbara Boxer retired prior to the 2016 election, after much deliberation Newsom announced he would not run for the open seat and instead announced he would run for governor.
Kamala Harris immediately jumped in and received a massive number of influential endorsements that kept serious competitors away.
Harris spent Friday campaigning in South Carolina and visiting Mother Emmanuel church, where nine attendees were slain during a 2015 bible study.
A crowded field from the Democrats
Democrats, of which there are now eleven, announcing their bids for president include Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), former V.P. Joe Biden and Cory Booker (D-NJ). Newsom’s support could play a key role in Harris’ effort to win the nomination.
California has moved its primary to early March to make a much bigger impact on the presidential race.
Senator Harris is working to earn the endorsement from other Congressional Black Caucus members like Rep Barbara Lee. Additionally, she’s using her past as an attorney general and federal prosecutors to gain support from progressives skeptical of the justice system.
Despite her promoting the New Green Deal and aligning herself with the new progressive socialist democrats now making noise, she claims to not be a socialist democrat.
