OTTUMWA, IA: In one of the worst staged campaign appearances ever seen, former Vice President Joe Biden stammered and crawled his way through a rambling incoherent speech. The badly stilted opening appearance in Iowa follows a series of missteps by the Biden campaign. Biden repeatedly attacked Donald Trump with a treasure trove of smears and insults, labeling him an “existential threat” to democracy.
All irony was lost on the former Vice President as he assailed the President for damaging our Democratic institutions. Blaming Charlottesville on the President. And lowering the standards of the American Presidency.
Perhaps Biden should be looking in the mirror.
Biden is up to his neck in the Russia hoax
All this from a man whose administration weaponized the intelligence agencies against the President. Rejected and undermined the results of the 2016 election. Was a member of the “extraordinary” committee in the White House that oversaw the Russia hoax. Was part and parcel of the illegal use of NSA databases to spy on American citizens from 2012 through 2016.
So it is wildly amusing to watch Donald Trump being attacked for the exact things Joe Biden and the Obama administration engaged in. All this on the day after Special Counsel John Durham announced a widespread investigation into the origins of the Russia hoax.
Including the Obama/Biden approval to use foreign intelligence agencies to spy on the Trump campaign.
A terrible case of bad campaign staff work
Biden looked unsteady and fumbling in a poorly managed event. Biden’s advance work for the event was sloppy to the point of being negligent. This is supposed to be the Democratic front runner?
The DNC and Biden staff knew they were giving this speech. They leaked the contents to the press beforehand. But the setting, microphone, backdrop, audio, and presentation resembled a PTA meeting rather than a campaign event. That is to say, it looked amateurish and extremely ill-planned.
The sound quality was terrible on FOX and MSNBC. The microphone crackled on and off. Biden’s voice distortion was glaring. Honestly, you hardly do any events, Joe. And when you do, enormous attention will be paid. Today was supposed to be the start of a head to head Biden vs Trump media clash contrast.
Instead, it was snore fest.
Biden: Iowa wrought with poor stagecraft, bad audio, meandering talking points
Well, Biden is going to be destroyed in any head to head competition. Trump is a master at these events.
In addition to Biden’s poor sound quality, there was no stage or backdrop to his speech. There was no signage to speak of. The lighting was terrible. Biden was by a bank of windows, and the glare from being backlight made it look like he was in semidarkness.
Pedestrians strolled by the windows on the sidewalk outside as he spoke. Climate change activists held signs up over his head at one point. Where is his staff? Did anyone check out the room? Maybe understand that television cameras are going to be there. That the looks and sound of a stumbling candidate on TV is speaking is vitally important?
A fumbling inarticulate presentation
Biden himself was repetitive, frequently making his points while looking down in a weak voice. His attempts to be folksy merely came off looking vacuous and unprepared. He spoke in trite contrived generalities about how horrific Trump was, in the process insulting the 60 million Americans who voted for Trump. The same voters in the heartland of America. Voters that Biden will have to win over in order to win.
On this day, CNN promises that Biden will eviscerate President Trump. However, Biden’s attempts at smearing Trump were more an old man reading talking points then a seasoned political warrior.
By constantly invoking the multiple lies of the Charlottesville myth Biden shows that the same people behind the Trump – Russia hoax are still in attack mode. They keep repeating the big lie. Because they are about to be fatally exposed by John Durham.
Terry McAuliffe and the myth of Charlottesville
Charlottesville occurred because Terry McAuliffe and the Democrat Mayor of Charlottesville caused it to happen. Wanted it to happen. And made sure no steps were taken to prevent or diffuse the tragic events from occurring.
Governor McAuliffe and the state police knew the Nazis and White Supremacists and Antifa were all coming. The space between the park where the Robert E. Lee statue is and Mr. Jefferson’s Rotunda and Quad is very short. State police knew they were gathering.
In the article Four California men charged for violence at Charlottesville rally, the author writes:
“A criminal complaint alleges the four men are members or associates of a California-based “militant white-supremacist organization” known as the Rise Above Movement.
“The four defendants traveled to Charlottesville for the August 2017 Unite the Right Rally with the intent to encourage, promote, incite, participate in and commit violent acts in furtherance of a riot,” the Justice Department said.
The complaint added that they attended and participated in a torch-lit march at the University of Virginia on Aug. 11, 2017, that also resulted in violence.”
Note that prior to Charlottesville, the same group was in the middle of violence. However knowing this, neither the Police nor the University took any steps to cordon off the area where the Nazis marched with torchlights. For UVA this ground is sacred. McAuliffe, the University and city had a duty to prevent this trespass. They were the officials in charge, not President Donald Trump.
McAuliffe is to blame for what happened in Charlottesville
Just as the next day the riot Police in Charlottesville were given orders to stand down. Even as the demonstrations began to escalate. As groups of Antifa and White Supremacists were given ample opportunity to mingle. It seems that local and state officials were encouraging the clash.
Terry McAuliffe was there in Charlottesville that day.
The state and local officials had substantial resources to act responsibly. The State Police and Terry McAuliffe had ample intelligence ahead of time. They knew who was attending the rally and what their plans were. And the cost is high. Two state troopers died that day in a helicopter crash. They were monitoring the demonstrations.
Charlottesville, the violence and deaths, were preventable. However, prevention meant working toward something other than discrediting Trump and Trump voters.
Never mind that Trump was specifically referencing those who opposed the removal of historical monuments as some “very fine people”. Biden was spewing a lie, and he knew it, and he doesn’t care.
Like Terry McAuliffe, who was both responsible for security that day, and to prevent what he knew was going to happen. Biden is exploiting tragedy he and his party helped create.
Joe Biden attacks Democracy when he doesn’t like the results
Biden seemed to believe that Trump’s election itself was undemocratic. He assailed Victor Orban of Hungary, who has been elected three times now, as anti-Democratic. Coming from the man whose party tried to rig the 2016 election, disregard the results when it didn’t go there way, and actively staged a coup attempt to overthrow the duly elected President of the United States.
Biden is neck deep in hypocrisy. He is clearly under investigation by John Durham. How deeply is Biden into the origins of the Russia Hoax, the abuse of NSA intelligence systems, and the use of foreign intelligence agencies to spy on Americans? Buckle up, Joe. You have a Grand Jury appearance coming your way.
Joe Biden, the Chinese, the Ukrainians, and bribery
His drug-addicted son Hunter is the subject of overt bribery schemes. (Biden Faces Conflict of Interest Questions That Are Being Promoted by Trump and Allies)
Taking $1.5 billion from the Bank of China from which he received fees in the millions each year, immediately after accompanying Vice President Biden to China on Air Force Two.
Taking between $3 and 6 million form Ukrainian oligarchs with Kremlin ties while Biden was handling the Ukrainian portfolio for the Obama White House. Whatever his failings on policy, Biden is the last person to be assailing anyone’s moral leadership regarding honesty and decency.
A campaign advance staff that doesn’t know what it’s doing
But today’s event in Iowa shows a clueless campaign staff doing their candidate an enormous disservice. It was, in short, a catastrophe for the advance team.
There is clearly no James Baker in the wings for Joe Biden. The contrast to later today could not be more glaring. When Trump speaks before thousands of rapturous followers on a stage with microphones that work and a carefully planned backdrop.
The difference could not be more obvious. And the win is Trump’s.
Biden is a weak candidate whose staff is not showing the chops to be up to the struggle that lies ahead for them. To create this event for him, but neglect the fundamentals of stagecraft and sound quality is appalling. Add the failings on substance and coherent message and it is yet another gaffe for Biden. This time courtesy of his own campaign.
In Iowa, a weak Joe Biden hears footsteps behind him
Whether Biden has the capability to turn out people to the Iowa caucuses is in question. Repeated plagiarism may turn out to be the least of Biden’s problems. However, if he can’t mount a campaign event any better than this he doesn’t stand a chance against Trump.
Today he played to small Iowa room to little applause or excitement. On a day billed as Trump vs Biden, Trump is inevitably crushing Biden. In substance, tone, and presentation.
Compare Biden’s event to the two thunderous events President Trump held on the same day in the same state. Just look at the stagecraft. Trump’s resounding message. Energy. The contagious enthusiasm. The sense of being part of a greater movement. There is no comparison.
After 60 years in public life, Joe Biden is still not ready for prime time.
