GIVAT SHMUEL, Israel July 21, 2015 — In the past, many supposed liberal Israel supporters in America have had little problem reconciling their allegiance to President Barack Obama with their devotion to the State of Israel, despite there being a gap wide enough to drive a sixteen-wheeler through between them.
Although Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have had a number of very-public spats, many on the left have used the President and the PMs’ diametrically opposing ideologies as an excuse for taking POTUS’s side.
“I don’t dislike Israel at all,” many self-ascribed Israel-loving leftists exclaim, “I just hate their current leader.”
For some, this is actually the case. There are certainly plenty of well-meaning (read: misguided) liberals who feel that the current Israeli government’s hawkish attitude is moving the country in the wrong direction. Sadly, the other left-wingers, the ones who worship the idea of liberalism above all else, pretend that this is the reason they attack the Jewish State, as well. “It’s for Israel’s own good that we seek its global condemnation,” they claim.
Under this force field, NGOs such as J-Street claim to be pro-Israel while their agenda has been set against the Jewish State since inception.
Many have been fooled into believing these claims of liberal “tough love” for Israel, but that is a possibility no longer.
Following the horrific deal between the P5+1 and Iran, brokered and championed by the Obama Administration last week, it will now be abundantly clear who is really pro-Israel and who is not. This epic disaster of a deal leaves fake Israel supporters with nowhere to hide.
Insisting that this deal is good for anybody other than Iran is absurd, but if an America wants to pretend that Iran needs Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles for Middle East use only, or that one of the world’s largest sponsors of international terrorism would forbid its proxies from attacking the US, or that last week’s rally in Teheran, attended by Iranian Prime Minister Hassan Rouhani, at which “Death to America” was the most popular refrain, was just for show, that’s its prerogative. But please do not pretend for even one second that Israel is anything but more at risk following this unfathomable capitulation.
One especially dastardly piece of fine print buried within this deal can be found on its 142nd page. On this page the P5 pledge, “Co-operation in the form of training courses and workshops to strengthen Iran’s ability to prevent, protect and respond to nuclear security threats to nuclear facilities and systems as well as to enable effective and sustainable nuclear security and physical protection systems.”
The underlying implication of this promise is that America will actually train Iran on how to protect itself from attacks on its nuclear weapons program, including ones similar to the highly effective cyberattack, Stuxnet, on Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility in 2010, which many believe was carried out by Israel. So not only will this deal set off a Middle East nuclear arms race, as countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt dash to keep up with the Ayatollah, it also takes away one of the only bloodless means to stop Iran if they violate their side of the agreement (and if history is any indication, it will). Israel, the country who has been taken to task time and again for its apparent bloodlust has found a way to stop Iran without setting off a world war and now, through this deal, the United States will help Iran take this option away. This backs Israel into a corner, as they must choose between doing nothing and taking military action, both of which will cost Israeli lives.
True supporters of Israel cannot be ok with Obama forcing Israel into this corner of doom.
The second glaring issue, or rather omission, in this agreement is the lack of any insistence on Iran curtailing its sponsorship of global terrorism. It is already well known that the terrorist group Hezbollah, which operates in Lebanon, is simply an Iranian proxy, attacking Israel from the North whenever Teheran tells them to. What should be even more concerning to Israel and its supporters are headlines such as one from the Wall Street Journal in April which states, “Iran Rekindles Relations with Hamas” or one in The Telegraph that same month which reads, “Iran is intensifying efforts to support Hamas in Gaza.”
For Israel, this means that Iran now has significant influence in the two largest terror threats to its people. Iran, Obama’s new partners, are puppet-masters of both Hezbollah and Hamas, who continue to terrorize the lives of everyday Israelis through rockets, stabbings, bombings, shootings and all of the other ways they have concocted to kill Jews. And what does this deal do? As the Israeli Ambassador to the US, Ron Dermer, outlined in the Washington Post last Tuesday, “The deal transfers to the Iranian regime’s coffers $150 billion that is now frozen in foreign bank accounts. Iran has a $300 billion to $400 billion economy. A $150 billion cash bonanza for the regime is the equivalent of $8 trillion flowing into the U.S. treasury,” with, “tens of billions…likely to flow to the Shiite militias in Iraq, the Assad regime in Syria, the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Palestinian terror groups in Gaza and other Iranian terror proxies in the region.”
True Supporters of Israel understand what it means for Israelis to live under the constant threat of a terror and thus, cannot be ok with Obama handing Iran billions of dollars to increase the frequency and carnage of these attacks.
While these two points are certainly not the only reasons true lovers of the Jewish State would oppose this deal, one would think that they are certainly sufficient on their own. In fact, this deal is so awful for Israel that is has unthinkably united the Israeli left and right.
For those who really do love Israel, there is still work to be done. People who want to help should be calling and writing their congressman as soon as possible and as many times as possible. While the Corker Bill has made it extremely difficult for Obama to be stopped, it still can be done and the deal being voted down on The Hill would be a resounding victory for Israel and its supporters.
So, with nowhere to hide it is time for everyone to come out of the shadows regarding the Jewish State. Supporters of Israel (and America, the Western World and human rights) will oppose this horrible deal, no matter how many times Obama, John Kerry and the rest of the White House henchmen claim there was no viable alternative (in fact, sanctions seemed to be particularly effective until Obama unilaterally lifted them). Supporters of Obama who pretend to care about Israel will support this deal because Obama tells them to and, without a doubt, they will call anyone who rejects the deal “racists” or “warmongers” because that’s their modus operendi.
Which side do you choose?
