GOP delegates and their ‘headaches’
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., April 2, 2016 – Schoolchildren are adept at missing school. They feign illness and lie abed, looking up at mom with those puppy dog eyes. Who can refuse them?
The excuses, of course, grow more refined and complex as children age into their teens and young adulthood. Convoluted stories, applying green eye shadow under the eyes or even the old stand-by, a stomach-ache, continue to serve as the years pile up.
And now, according to one interviewee on Fox News over the weekend, “adult” GOP delegates might engage the self-same time-worn excuses to escape the definitive, determinative first vote for the party’s national candidate. According to him, delegates may find a need to return to their hotel rooms during the first vote. They might fall ill. Perhaps their grandmother’s taken a fall and is in the hospital. Or a problem tooth’s acting up again and requires immediate attention.
Give us credit. We adults still have the capability to retain our youthful freshness and child’s outlook on life. We learn early to take our advantage where and however we can. Those early malingering, excuse-making years will come in handy at the GOP national election convention.
But many of the thousands of citizens showing up at Ben Carson, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump rallies are tired of these children. They’ve already seen them up the wazoo operating in Washington. Lengthy Senate recesses. When exactly do they work in Washington? High-level malfeasance that results, not in firings, but in lateral transfers to other jobs, often carrying higher salaries. Rewards for bad actors inside the Beltway, anyone?
Many in America thought this election would be different. Realer. Closer to the ground. Bearing a new brand of common sense and an end to political correctness and professional victimhood.
With GOP delegates already planning for those bad headaches at the convention, remarkably “conveniently” timed, we may have had it wrong. Political idealism once again will end up on the mat for the 10 count.
The country really is in tatters. We no longer have examples of sound leadership and the rule of law. Just excuses.
Always with the excuses.
