WASHINGTON, February 25, 2014 – The NFL is treading on astroturf best left untrod. The NFL is jumping into Arizona’s fight the only way they know how. Do as we say or we will take our ball and go away. The 2015 Super Bowl, to be held in Arizona, will be taken away from Arizona if Governor Brewer signs “The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA).”
The RFRA says that no one will be forced to provide services to someone if they object to that person’s sexual orientation based on their religious beliefs. The left has gone into overdrive mode to try and kill this measure that protects religious freedom. In state after state, where homosexual marriage has been legalized, homosexual activists have (intentionally) gone to Christian businesses, such as wedding photographers and bakers and demanded take them on as client.
It is interesting to note that of the businesses being persecuted, people who create food and take photos do so from artistic passion. Those artists who refuse are then persecuted with the full weight of the state through so-called “Human Rights” commissions. Sweet Cakes by Melissa, located in Gresham, Oregon, has closed their doors, eliminating jobs, and taxes, from the community. The bakers refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple.
A note on the bakery’s door after it was closed said:
“This fight is not over. We will continue to stand strong. Your Religious Freedom is becoming not Free anymore. This is ridiculous that we can not practice our faith. The LORD is good and we will continue to serve Him with all our heart. ♥”
Baker Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop, Lakewood, Colorado faces jail time after declining to bake a same-sex wedding cake. Phillips did not refuse to bake them a cake, or sell them cookies, but refused to bake them a wedding cake – an offering that he sees as a part of the wedding celebration and which he views as a religious ceremony. According to Phillips faith marriage is only between a man and woman.
Administrative Law Judge Robert Spencer acknowledged Phillips beliefs before ordering him to bake cakes for any same sex couples requesting them in the future. In a very contradictory way Phillips findings of fact state:
“Phillips has been a Christian for approximately 35 years, and believes in Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior. As a Christian, Phillips’ main goal in life is to be obedient to Jesus and His teachings in all aspects of his life[;] Phillips believes the Bible is the inspired word of God[;] its commands are binding on him[;] God’s intention for marriage is the union of one man and one woman.”
The left is bringing the full weight of their bullying to Arizona even though Brewer has previously vetoed other similar bills.
Rush Limbaugh recently pointed out that the left now views the NFL as a massive propaganda opportunity saying “The National Football league has become a social laboratory playground for the left”.
The Obama Administration has recruited football teams, and players, to promote Obamacare and before the Super Bowl this year, tried to get many NFL players to use their personal Twitter feeds to promote Obamacare. Judicial Watch.com has reported that Maryland Health Connection inked a $130,000 contract with The Baltimore Ravens for use of the Super Bowl champs images and team logos in the promotion of Affordable Health Care.
Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (@brendon310) regularly tweets his support of President Obama, whom he genuinely seems to admire, only that contract takes the public figure of an athlete from being a supporter to being part of the Obama propaganda machine when coupled with the Maryland Health Connection contract.
Who is your favorite president and why? I loved Bill Clinton but my favorite POTUS is Obama. It’s… http://t.co/52qlF4tTSy

In many ways, the NFL, a 501C6 tax-exempt organization, is the epitome of crony socialism. This despite the fact the NFL generates billions of dollars they receive a large portion of taxpayers dollars. For example, almost every NFL franchise is in a city that paid for its stadium and every couple of years, the same battle is fought out. An NFL franchise threatens to move unless the city it resides in agrees to use taxpayer dollars to build new facilities.
In Minneapolis, Viking Stadium is under construction. This will be the newest NFL stadium. The people of Minneapolis will be forced to pay for the cost, which is estimated to be $678 million over the thirty-year life of the stadium. Not $678 million for schools, or infrastructure. But $678 million to support an already billion dollar a year entertainment group.
So now the NFL is using their considerable offensive line to demand that Arizona goes the way the left wants Arizona to go. The NFL can choose, should Brewer sign the act, to take their business elsewhere. The can choose to be shills for Obamacare. Players can tweet their support of President Obama and his policies all they want to.
However, consumers are free to make their decisions as well. People who want to buy a wedding cake in Oregon or Colorado can choose from dozens of bakers that do not uphold religious beliefs that oppose gay marriage. Quick searches for “wedding cake bakeries” within 25 miles of Gresham, Oregon turned up dozens of pages of response. The Denver Colorado area boasts even more.
They can also choose to not support pro-football. Because at the end of the day it is all about our Constitutional freedom of choice. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. famously said “The right to swing my fist ends where the other man’s nose begins.”
If the Baltimore Ravens want to be the Obamacare Ravens, that is their choice. If a baker or photographer wants to refuse a contract, that is their choice.
It is also the choice of millions of real Americans to use a different baker, photographer, or turn the NFL off.
The NFL needs to take politics out of its game.
If they do not, they may discover Americans will find another sport to support. And as painful as it may be to fellow Communities Digital News writer Eric Golub, maybe its time to take conservative support away from football.
