LOS ANGELES, April 11, 2014 — Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced her resignation yesterday. While she was technically not fired, people do not give up a cushy government job with absolute power when they have the full confidence of the boss. The cliche about wanting to spend more time with her family was not offered this time, since that is code for a pending indictment. The former Kansas Governor is one of the few original appointees of President Obama not being accused of corruption. In the end, her lack of corruption may have been her undoing.
The Obama administration is drowning under the weight of various scandals, many of them far more serious than anything that engulfed Sebelius. Sebelius was the one to fall because in Obamaworld, some sins are acceptable and others are not.
Attorney General Holder has been held in civil and criminal contempt of Congress. He is up to his neck in the Fast and Furious scandal. The gunrunning sting set up by his Department of Justice got an American border guard and over 200 Mexicans killed. Holder repeatedly spars with members of Congress, and is not shy about playing the race card to demonize anybody questioning his job performance.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has the Benghazi scandal to bury. She got four people killed by failing to keep her employees safe on the 11th anniversary of the original September 11th attacks. She retired to pursue a presidential nomination that is expected to be handed to her. Any criticism of her results in charges of sexism against her critics.
Former IRS official Lois Lerner was just held in contempt of Congress for using the IRS to target conservatives participating legally in the political process. Despite the best efforts of Maryland Democrat Elijah Cummings to discredit the hearings, recent evidence unearthed shows Cummings to be a key figure himself in initiating the targeting.
Current Secretary of State John Kerry has not gotten anybody killed yet, but that is expected to change in a few weeks. His demanding that Israel release Palestinian terrorists for the sake of peace should lead those Islamist Jihadists back to the battlefield. They are determined to kill Israelis by occupation and trained to do so by trade. Kerry’s peace process was a complete failure.
Unfortunately for Sebelius, she is the first one to take a fall because she is the most expendable.
Holder and Clinton are both being accused of massive corruption. So far they have successfully protected Obama. Holder is black and Hillary is aiming to be the first woman president. They are untouchable, and any investigation into their behavior gets dismissed as bigotry. For successfully playing the race and gender cards and saving Obama at all costs, they are a net plus to him.
Lerner is also doing everything possible to protect Obama. If she goes down, she may take others with her. Like Holder and Clinton, her mission was successful. Conservatives were harassed, intimidated and bullied out of the political process long enough for Obama to get reelected.
Kerry is useless, but failing to bring Middle East peace does not harm anybody who matters. Nobody else has fixed that problem. That is one area where success would have been far worse than failure. Palestinians tend to take peace agreements, break their word, and launch new attacks. By failing to reach a deal, Israel can keep building on their land, some Palestinian terrorists remain imprisoned, and Kerry can go back to focusing on climate change. Until Kerry actually gets a few innocent people killed, he remains a less worse State Department head than Clinton.
In the world of liberal governance, corruption is considered less sinful than incompetence. Kathleen Sebelius presided over colossal incompetence. She spent over $600 million to build a website that experts in the field said could be built for $1 million. She had four years to build this website. On the first day, Healthcare.gov serviced exactly six people, or $100 million per person.
This bungling put the Obama administration into a defensive crouch that it still has not recovered from. She set the bar for Obamacare success at seven million enrollees by March 31, 2014. Knowing she was going to fall far short, she simply lowered the standard for enrollment from those paying premiums to anybody who had filled out paperwork. By the time Obama took a victory lap and spiked the football for reaching the seven million number, many Americans had calculated that his number was fake. The optimism of Sebelius and Obama was quickly eroded by reality. Democrats up for reelection are fleeing from the Affordable Care Act debacle that for most people remains unaffordable.
It is one thing to commit bad deeds. It is another to make Obama look bad. Holder, Clinton, Lerner and Kerry have all to varying degrees cut corners and jumped on grenades to save Obama. Sebelius gave Obama’s critics new grenades to launch at him. Hurting society at large is fine as long as it helps Obama. Hurting Obama is not acceptable.
Even by the low standards of Obama’s administration, Sebelius did not measure up. If only she was corrupt instead of incompetent, she could have stayed. Instead, she had to go.
