WASHINGTON: On voting day, turn-out is king. Final tallies rely on the excitement of the parties to “win, win, win.” Say what you will about President Donald J. Trump, and many already have, he speaks to “the forgotten man.” His message to the middle American, gun-loving, hard-working, humble before God everyday American is, after God, to put America first. But in this 2018 mid-term election, where is the forgotten Democrat of old?
The forgotten Democrat in 2018
The old-school Democrat has all but been forgotten. It seems the “nice” Democrat of old has gone the way of the dinosaurs. Only a couple of Democrat spokespersons, like Doug Schoen, Alan Dershowitz, are left reminding us of the Patrick Moynihan’s and Henry “Scoop” Jacksons of yore. Democrats who believed in their politics and carried with them a self-image of the “do-gooder.” They walked lightly on the earth, singing “Kumbayah,” worrying about the underprivileged among us. In other words, whether or not one believed as they did, the early Democrats wore well with the American people.
A half decade later, what does Old School Democrats have left to them?
Antifa rioters, a conglomeration of left-wing autonomous self-styled anti-fascist militant groups using direct action, harassing those whom they identify as fascists, racists or right-wing extremists. Congresswoman Maxine Waters, partisan leftists’ self-designated Aunt, who advises her followers,
“If you see a member of the Trump cabinet, ‘Pushback.’”
According to “Auntie Maxine,” cabinet members and highly visible Trump enablers should expect harassment at restaurants, gas stations, shopping places, and even their homes.
Democrat leader, Nancy Pelosi is wondering why there aren’t uprisings against the Trump administration and over conditions on the border with Mexico, across the nation. “Maybe there will be.” Mrs. Pelosi said there might be “uprisings” over children at the U.S. southern border when asylum seekers decide not to arrive at a proper checkpoint.
“I just don’t even know why there aren’t uprisings all over the country, and maybe there will be when people realize that this is a policy that they defend,” she said. “It’s a horrible thing, and I don’t see any prospect for legislation here.”
The Republican Party immediately blasted her “extreme rhetoric.” Celebrities, Madonna (I’ve thought a lot about blowing up the White House); Robert DeNiro (I’d like to punch Trump in the face); Kathy Griffin, posing for a photo holding a replica of the bloody, severed head of Donald Trump, are all members of the extreme Democrat party.
Pink Pussy Hats over dialogue
The #MeToo movement, in which democrat women demonstrated against conservative judges they fear will abandon abortion rights. Their attention-getting attire, pink “vagina hats,” were crude, but at least not violent. The cat-eared headwear was part of a grassroots campaign in the weeks leading up to the Jan. 2017 marches that urged women to knit their hats as a sign of solidarity. The hat was so popular that it earned a spot on the cover of Time Magazine in February 2017.
The forgotten Democrat still obeys the law and supports his fellow dinosaurs who practice non-violent reform. Parades? Pickets? Visiting your Congressmen on the Hill? All are actions within the Democrat playbook. Unfortunately, the old ways are being left behind by the far socialistic leftists, the “new Democrats.”
The newbies claim to represent all Democrats. However, they manifest themselves by black hooded rioters, reminiscent of the Brown Shirts of pre-Nazi Germany. Berkeley students join them, physically ejecting political speakers they don’t like; Portland, Oregon rioters, taking over the streets and breaking things. And the odd emboldened loon, shooting up a congressional ball game, severely wounding a Members of Congress.
The forgotten democrat struggles to deal with this turn of events.
Most, whom themselves have done nothing outside the law, must handle their party’s methods as best they can. Others find it necessary to cope by using psychological transference, shifting blame onto others. The schoolyard comes to mind, “I know you are, but what am I?”
“Show me the man and I’ll find you the crime . . .”
One such forgotten democrat, fighting back against his party’s adverse actions is Alan Dershowitz, author of “Trumped Up: How Criminalization of Political Differences Endangers Democracy.”
“The idea of trying to create crimes just because we disagree with [Trump] politically, and target him, really endangers democracy. It reminds me of what Lavrentiy Beria, the head of the KGB, said to Stalin, ‘show me the man, and I’ll find you the crime…’” My point is that we should not stretch existing criminal laws to fit political opponents with whose policies we disagree.”
A steadfast supporter of Hillary Clinton, Dershowitz insists the laws of the country not be broken for political convenience and gain. He calls for his party’s return to order:
“’All decent people’ must condemn Farrakhan after his anti-Semitic comments.”
To his fellow Democrats who, following Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court, suggested investigating and possibly impeaching the newest justice, Dershowitz warned they would only be shooting themselves in the foot:
“The left has risked ‘destroying’ the Supreme Court nomination process,” he said.
In an era of political correctness, when words, meaning, and free speech are on the skids, ‘fair play’ Dershowitz still insists on the law. Just because an act is heinous, the mere stating of a said act does not of itself prove the accuser believable.
“The most disturbing thing about the controversy surrounding Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh is seeing people on television immediately accept Kavanaugh’s sexual assault accuser as a victim and Kavanaugh as a perpetrator.”
We get it. New ‘replacement Democrats’ in situ want nothing to do with allowing another conservative on the highest bench. Moreover, they eschew fair play and the law by making scurrilous, unfounded claims, vilifying and ruining reputations, and disrupting the Congress in session.
Democrats vitriol over facts
The forgotten Democrat must be confused and disheartened by their party’s new standby mantra, “By any means necessary.” Amplifying the new Democrats’ extra-legal methods, of course, are social media. Why look to the law when loud noises and breaking things gains so much more immediate attention? Many have discovered that the best way to promote their views is to threaten the other side. However, not with facts but with vitriol and hate presented with boulders chucked through the windows of the opposition.
In the meantime, the forgotten Democrat is left in a quandary.
Should the forgotten Democrat remain silent? Even as despicable, violent lawbreaking is done in his name? Should he leave his party and turn independent? Alternatively, should he join President Trump and the opposition in their mission to make America great again?
A hint as to where these moderate, law-abiding Democrat dinosaurs will land will be revealed by the mid-term elections. Not to mention the events leading up to the 2020 Presidential election.
Will the forgotten democrat accept, deny, change, or take to the streets? Alternatively, will he reject the whole argument, choosing instead to ignore the law tiptoeing away on silent kitty cat feet?
Where is the forgotten democrat today? Moreover, where will he be tomorrow?
Will he promote the return to polite discourse, checks, and balances, fair play, and adamant, but non-violent, dialogue? Or will his party’s anger prevail? Will Democrat violence escalate, promoting democrat policies “by any means necessary?”
The country needs the level-headed democrat, the forgotten Democrat, to prevail.
Because if the forgotten Democrat is not stepping up within his party to re-center its rationale, it could prove disastrous in the end.
