Dr. Benjamin Carson and his fight for First Amendment Rights

Why are Joe Biden and Glen Beck attacking Dr. Carson and free speech?

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 8, 2015 – God Bless Dr. Benjamin Carson. Dr. Carson, the retired Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon and potential GOP candidate for a run at the presidency, recently raised a minor political maelstrom again with comments regarding his views on homosexuality. He had not stirred up such a commotion across the nation since the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, when Carson spoke out strongly against the dangers of “political correctness.” At that time he said that, “PC is dangerous because it puts a muzzle on people from discussing important issues while the fabric of this nation is being changed.”

As if by way of practical demonstration and in proving his point a little over two years later, he has stirred controversy to the point of having both the likes of Glenn Beck and Vice President Joe Biden devoting their attention to Carson’s words, both uttering their own disparaging remarks regarding Dr. Carson. Yet Carson’s statement, part of a pre-recorded statement that was conveniently set up to neglect the entire context of his interview, has been jumped upon by both the Democrats and the Conservatives, as well as the professional political pundits and self-proclaimed prophets of doom. Many of this politically enlightened class do not credit Carson’s chances of being taken seriously for the GOP nomination for POTUS.

Joe Biden has attacked Dr. Carson and his comments. However, Biden and many others may have forgotten President Obama’s infamous pre-recorded interview in late January of this year with GloZell Green, appearing in a bathtub of milk and cereal. At that time, Obama said that homosexuals make a “lifestyle choice” with their sexuality. Of course, when Obama says something like this it is perfectly acceptable, but the hypocrisy of the Democrats and the Left is absolutely astounding.

And Dr. Carson, concerned about the fabric of this nation being changed is the one who stands out as the one out of step. People who are paying attention have trouble with such a blatant double standard.

The “Rev.” Joe Biden, of course, is not a minister (far from it) or a paragon of virtue – especially when it comes to his own church’s perceptions of many social issues. In his own book, “Promises to Keep,” he proclaims, “My idea of self, of family, of community, of the wider world comes straight from my religion. It’s not so much the Bible, the beatitudes, the Ten Commandments, the sacraments, or the prayers I learned. It’s the culture.” Any good person of conscience could conclude that if Joe Biden is trying to mount the moral high ground, he is going to have a long hike.

Ironically, the Democrats and many of their leaders are well out of the scope of moral virtue as defined, not by culture, but by holy writings from genuine religious movements and traditional religions. If a perceptive student of history remembers, as recent as the 2012 election cycle, Democrats were making a serious attempt to remove God from their platform. Changes regarding replacing the words “God” and “Jerusalem” in their official party platform only came after Republicans (most likely the conservative arm) took time publicly criticizing the opposition party for removing the words, while it appeared that a majority at the Democratic Convention disapproved of putting such “incendiary” words back into their platform.

At this time, despite being criticized for not being strong enough against the Obama agenda, Mitt Romney stated that taking God out of the Democratic Party platform was evidence that the party was “veering further and further away into an extreme wing that Americans don’t recognize.” In actuality, what Romney said in 2012 is more recognizable in 2015 as evidenced in the milk and cereal interview of the president of the United States. It seems that it will continue to be so. The Democrats have stitched together so many fringe elements under their umbrella that what appears to be a major political party is a party of older, die-hard, “dyed in the wool” Democrats, serious leftists and socialists, and younger people with incredible ideals but of little faith, except that proclaimed by the Rev. Joe Biden, et al.

On the other side of the political spectrum, the following of Glenn Beck witnessed a parallel expression of antagonism towards Dr. Carson’s words. While it may be true that in the world within the boundaries of the political arena, there are those like Glenn Beck who have taken this recent opportunity to publicly write off Dr. Carson’s viable chances in the race to become president in 2016, it never is that straightforward in the political arena. If one looks carefully at Beck’s previous pronouncements on the air regarding Dr. Carson, he had never really jumped on the bandwagon of support for the good doctor. From a broader scope, it appears as if Glenn Beck saw an opportunity to further emphasize his personal opinion regarding Carson, which seems to be that Carson is not his favorite candidate.

What this series of incidences have in common is that they fundamentally prove that Dr. Carson is correct in his assessment of political correctness. The events speak for themselves, as well as the political fallout stemming from Dr. Carson’s words. Being politically incorrect as Dr. Carson has proven himself to be, and the recent ensuing attacks against him for speaking his opinions, serves as the very examples of what he has warned against two years ago.

This could be one of the most insidious forms of attack upon First Amendment rights in our country’s history. In essence, Americans can only talk about freedom of speech or the right of freedom of the press. Carson’s depiction of the muzzlling of political correctness is a reality.

To trample upon one’s ability to express a desire for open dialogue on controversial issues is reminiscent of the gag order to suppress discussion of slavery in the halls of Congress several years before the outbreak of the Civil War. Intelligent leaders of the U.S. Congress were stifled in any genuine attempts to bring such a discussion concerning the evils of slavery out into the light of rational discussion. It seems that this is the exact type of danger concerns Dr. Carson. Of course, in that time period, it was the Democrats who were stifling public debate via legal decree. With PC, it is far easier with a lapdog media subservient to the party line.

It seems that today, the conceptualization of political correctness is for all practical purposes a gag order for intelligent people to have rational discussion on controversial issues. Again, at the heart of this reality are the Democrats. Insidious, yet effective. It seems that today, Democrat leaders in the government at all levels advocate such political correctness. It seems that today the mainstream media falls into lockstep harmony with the tunes of political correctness. It is much easier for the big business of the media elites, primarily sympathetic to the Democrats and dependent upon them for their talking points, to tell Americans how to think about anything from what soap to use to which candidates for political office to trust.  It seems that is exactly why millions of Americans support Dr. Carson – he is fighting for freedom of speech!

An interesting point that Dr. Carson allows himself to be used as an instrument of proof of his point regarding the P.C police. Political correctness is killing this free nation. This latest attack on the first amendment should embolden him and his supporters to fight that much harder to regain this country from the Progressives.

Mr. Jamison hits the nail on the head, once again. Thanks for sharing your mental clarity on this subject.

“It seems that today the mainstream media falls into lockstep harmony with the tunes of political correctness. It is much easier for the big business of the media elites, primarily sympathetic to the Democrats and dependent upon them for their talking points, to tell Americans how to think about anything from what soap to use to which candidates for political office to trust.”

And therein lies the crux of the problem.

It is the continued collective, corrosive and pessimistic attitude of the liberal bent that makes this such a nasty business. Gone are the days where clear thinking individuals assemble a rational and reasoned argument prior to launching a responsible rebuttal. In today’s politics, reckless speed and volume is what matters most — with speed the product of emotion and thoughtlessness, and volume the product of anxiety and animus. Liberals, through much practice, have finely honed these Kamikaze skills, knowing full well that enough direct hits might eventually sink the ship. In the case of Glen Beck, the damage assessment appears premature.

Thankfully, the USS Dr. Ben Carson is heavily armor plated and can withstand the onslaught, protected by a shield of blunt honesty and incredible fortitude. The good doctor will need this shield, for the attacks will be relentless, unfair and unnecessary, much like those fifty years ago on the Edmond Pettus Bridge.

Maintaining a positive attitude under such circumstances is critical for several reasons. First, defending a principled point of view is how great leaders are formed. Second, standing with firm resolve against mob mentality shows persistence, and third, great men do great things when faced with the reality that, if not me, then who?

Dr. Martin Luther King, President Ronald Reagan, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are examples of individuals who stood (and, regarding the latter, continue to stand) for their strong beliefs. Each was willing to endure relentless beatings over and over again, and yet each thankfully survived after whispering that famous phrase “Please sir, may I have another?”.

Such is the case for Dr. Carson. The case for goodness is strong, the need for clarity is great, and the sense of urgency is upon us. Flanked by the Constitution and American Exceptionalism, Dr. Ben Carson is poised to defeat the naysayers, the gutless and the devious. In the end, should he (seek and) lose the presidential nomination, then by design, the people have spoken. However, should Dr. Carson be victorious, we all win, for good has finally triumphed over evil, despite what Glen Beck said.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it here: Dr. Carson’s refusal to bend to political correctness nor abide by it, is his most endearing trait to me. How refreshing.

A great article Mr.Jamison, you captured the man’s abundant character well.

took the words right out of my mouth.

Of course we don’t need the First Amendment to protect “popular” speech, or perspectives or views that everyone agrees with. (Those on the left can switch their views on DOMA, whether or not homosexuality is a “lifestyle choice”, about their service in the military, etc with nary a notice from the press. Those same views, as Dennis pointed out, are responded to quite differently when they emanate from the mouths of Republicans.

Dr. Carson not only is politically incorrect, he’s totally uninterested in parsing his opinions to be “palatable” to the intellectually unsophisticated and uninformed. He doesn’t do “nuance”, and doesn’t run his views by focus groups and consultants. And since every single thing he says is judged and taken out of context, misinterpreted at best and twisted at worst, those of us who fervently believe in his leadership and wisdom can celebrate our diversity of thought, even among conservatives.

Beautiful article, Dennis. Nobody says it better.

I for one really don’t care how any of them try and discredit Dr. Carson. I also am not political correct , never have been and I don’t intend to change. Ben Carson has my vote in 2016…

Dr. Ben Carson along with Col. Allen West both call a spade a spade when opining on all issues. They both show great character , integrity , honesty and intelligence. If they teamed up , we would win in a landslide with nearly 50% of the Hispanic and Black vote. With common sense solutions – they would return our country back to the greatest military / economic force on our planet.
