WASHINGTON, January 23, 2014 – NY Times best-selling author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza was indicted by a Manhattan federal grand jury Thursday on charges that he made arrangements to give excessive contributions to a candidate for U.S. Senate. According to Reuters, the indictment alleges that D’Souza reimbursed $20,000 to “straw donors” that he asked to donate to a U.S. Senate campaign.
D’Souza was charged in the indictment with one count of making illegal contributions in the names of others, and one count of causing false statements to be made.
Federal law in 2012 limited primary and general election campaign contributions to $2,500 each, for a total of $5,000, from any individual to any one candidate.
“As we have long said, this Office and the FBI take a zero tolerance approach to corruption of the electoral process,” the U.S. Attorney for Manhattan, Preet Bharara, said in a statement released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Bharara is an Obama appointee.
“2016: Obama’s America,” which he directed, is an unflattering, anti-Obama documentary that was released near the end of the president’s re-election campaign. An outspoken conservative commentator, D’Souza began his career as editor of the Policy Review, which was then owned by the Heritage Foundation.
Leaving the Heritage Foundation to join the Reagan White House as an advisor, D’Souza also began his work at the American Enterprise Institute. D’Souza, born in Mumbai, India in 1961, became an American citizen in 1991 and was named the president of King’s college in 2010 where he remained until his resignation in 2012. He has authored several NYT bestsellers, and the film 2016: Obama’s America became the second highest grossing documentary in history.
Interestingly enough, D’Souza is currently working on another film, America, slated to hit theaters in July.
We are now living in the America that we warned our fellow citizens could come to pass if President Obama were re-elected,” Dinesh D’Souzahas has said (see video). “Like it or not America is now the nation that Barack Obama Junior and Senior dreamed of creating. Americans are right to be terrified as they see the transformation of America take place before their very eyes. But it’s at great moments of peril like this that we need to regroup and rediscover the first principles of what made America great.
D’Souza, a conservative intent on holding the Obama administration accountable, claims he is now being targeted by an Obama appointee. Another conservative filmmaker, James O’Keefe of Project Veritas, announced this week that he, too, is being targeted.
If convicted, D’Souza could be looking at a maximum of 2 years for the alleged illegal contributions, and a maximum of 5 years for allegedly making false statements.
The case is U.S. v. D’Souza, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 14-cr-00034.
