Destroying Obamacare without crashing down America’s political house

Cutting big redwoods in California. Even the largest trees can be felled with the right technique.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., November 13, 2014 — Now that Republicans have gained control of the U.S. Senate, work can begin to unravel the unconstitutional monstrosity known as Obamacare. Americans are not as stupid as the liberal architects of Obamacare believe:

A majority have always opposed it, and many want it repealed completely. Ripped out by the roots and tossed on the burn pile.

That may not be the best approach. When you rip a tree out by the roots, you have the whole tree. Take it down in sections, and you have parts of the tree that remain useable as firewood.

Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. –Matt 3:10

The problem is that designers of Obamacare sought to make it impossible to repeal. They planted this tree very close to the house.

They hoped that its roots and branches would be so entwined in our system that it would be an impossible task. They postponed unpopular parts of the law to avoid political fallout; they changed provisions of the law at will to preserve it.

This year I needed to cut two trees that had grown near the house. They would have fallen onto the house had I used the brute-force approach, chopping it down at the roots. So I didn’t. I considered the situation for several weeks.

Then I consulted a professional.

The professionals started by climbing up the tree and trimming the branches. Then they topped the tree. Finally, they were able to drop the trunk so that it did not hit the house.

Why damage the house when you don’t have to?

That’s what we need to do to Obamacare. It has been in place too long to simply rip it out overnight. That would hurt too many people that rely on the insurance they now have.

But it has not been so long enough that it can’t be done. It will damage our healthcare house if we’re not careful.

Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. — Abraham Lincoln

Congressional Republicans have floated some good ideas for where to start: Repeal the medical devices tax, which is stifling innovation; raise the definition of a full-time worker from 30 to the normal 40 hours, which is hurting part-time workers; eliminate the employer mandate; kill the death panel known as “IPAB”; kill the individual mandate that the Supreme Court should have done in 2012, or at least eliminate the penalty for non-compliance; allow people to buy whatever kind of insurance they want wherever they can obtain it.

Each of these steps will have two salubrious effects. First, the steps themselves will restore the liberties the people rightfully own. Second, each bad policy branch of the law will be individually exposed, dissected and removed in the broad light of day. Those who didn’t know what was in the law will find out, shocking revelation by shocking revelation.

Consider this: Had the Supreme Court made the right decision in 2012 and declared the individual mandate unconstitutional, the rest of this horrible law would still be in place. Every single piece of this unconstitutional and immoral law must be exposed.

Then, finally, when the naked trunk is left for all to see, the remaining stump can be cut down and thrown into the fire.
