INDIANAPOLIS, April 2, 2015 –Dear Hillary, I just wanted to let you know that your position as the 2016 presidential front-runner is still secure. The latest Quinnipiac poll shows that, in several large key states, more than 40 percent of likely voters still call you “trustworthy and honest.”
That’s incredible, but it’s way more than you need. People vote for dishonest politicians all the time; they endorse politicians they don’t trust. Why? Because they don’t trust politicians, period. So the fact that anyone trusts you, especially after the latest round of revelations and your obvious lying on the record, shows both a phenomenal naïveté and a high tolerance for liars among the American public.
Relax; you can ride the Clinton tradition of brazen lies all the way to the White House. People will vote for you. There are Democrats who always vote Democratic; their grandparents were grateful to FDR for being president when they got to buy booze again; there are unionistas who remember their parents’ glory days of American manufacturing dominance, before their ultra-high wages and over-regulation moved American factories overseas. There are the women who will vote for free abortions, and the women who will vote for any woman (as long as she’s a Democrat). Jews vote Democratic, no matter how many times Democrats are rude to Israel. Catholics no longer consider abortion a big issue. Blacks vote Democratic – 98 percent and 95 percent in the past two elections. They’ll vote overwhelmingly Democratic, whether their candidate is black or not (but in higher numbers if the candidate is black). Hispanics, formerly dominated by their predominantly Catholic backgrounds and therefore anti-abortion, now vote according to which party promises to make their illegal relatives into easy U.S. citizens, voters and recipients of public goods. So, you have the Hispanic vote. You have the LGBT people, who, like previous pressure groups, are seeking the special privileges you’ll promise them.
Somewhere, added to these giant non-thinking blocs, you have a few people who actually believe that whatever you offer is better than whatever the opposition is offering. They follow issues and somehow understand your positions, and they like them. While they can’t be understood by most other thinking people, their votes count, and you’ll get them.
You can count on the press, still. That’s thanks to a move you made more than 20 years ago, that most people have forgotten – your FBI files. To the extent that they can still ruin the lives and careers and reputations of those still in power in both parties and the press (or their spouses, bosses or friends), you retain a lot of leverage over what gets reported and how.
If you had gotten the FBI file on Barack Obama instead of, say, Dick Gephardt back in ‘93, you’d be finishing your second term now, rather than still clawing your way through the bodies on your way to the Oval Office. But who knew, then? He was just an obscure community organizer, an anonymous writer and activist, teaching part-time in Chicago.
You have the loyal Democrats, unions, women, blacks, Hispanics, any of “the 47 percent” who are on the take, and even a few people who think your positions are well thought out. Opposing you are loyal Republicans, those who think you’re a crook or a communist, and those few remaining people who work and think.
And a few people who are insulted by your superior attitude, regarding your privilege and brains over theirs.
Of course you had just one email device; of course you turned over all your emails. Of course you are concerned about the silly rules – they just don’t apply to you.
You’ll still poll well. And that’s against a generic opponent, one that hasn’t even yet gone through the vitriolic shredder of your hateful, non-thinking, one-issue supporters. That’s even before the Republican establishment presents the blandest-possible candidate and lame strategy, all the while trying to explain why his own foot is in his mouth.
And nobody will think of what’s best for the country, or discuss the deficit, or foreign policy or the Fed’s flooding the top end of the investor class with free money, or – dare anyone mention them? – the Constitutional limits of government.
Sleep well, Hillary. You’re still a lock.
