Los Angeles, February 24, 2018.– CPAC in 2018, the Conservative Political Action Conference is annually held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Overlooking the Potomac River, the grand resort is like a city within a hotel.
Full-sized colonial-style homes that sub as quaint shops residing beneath the atrium that makes up the courtyard.
Trees, gardens and flowing streams meander throughout. Numerous restaurants and over-priced soft drinks or pop as I call it along with other miscellaneous merchandise in the shape of a Maryland crab or Cherry Blossom shot glasses can be purchased at shops located in the interior of the hotel.
Never having to leave your hotel can be convenient, but pricey.
The property is a mega labyrinth of venues for whatever your convention needs may be. The property is so large, that your smartphone GPS with walking instructions may be needed to return to your room.
The Gaylord is truly an experience in its own right. With its glamour and fun, it is the perfect CPAC Conservative destination.
The Conservative Commune at the 2018 Conservative Political Action Conference
Conservatives from across the country look forward to reuniting with others in the political movement every year. Like a family reunion, except you don’t argue over politics while eating the holiday feast because, for the most part, you agree with each other.
It’s spring break (in winter) for the middle-aged and younger-Conservatives gone wild.
This marks the second CPAC since Donald Trump took office, and while some in attendance claim the event had no energy, I found that was not necessarily the case. Perhaps some felt that the urgency to get things done has passed.
Donald Trump is in the house
However when President Trump took to the stage an enormous amount of energy returned. Whether Trump riles you up or motivates you, there is no denying he is a scene stealer.
I was present for both Vice President Mike Pence and President Trump’s speeches. They both had the same message, but totally different styles. It is a kind of bad cop/good cop type of thing with Pence being the good cop and Trump as the bad one.
Pence is soft-spoken and gentle while Trump is like: you want a piece of me, you want a piece of this?
Vice President Mike Pence
Vice President Mike Pence spoke of unity among the political parties saying this is
“A time of too much division and too much anger in America”.
The Vice President saying that we are too disconnected and not willing to listen to one another. He is absolutely right. We are now living in a time when we are segregating ourselves among those who agree with ME and those who don’t.
While eating lunch at the hotel restaurant, a table of men could be overheard talking about the event and mocking those with a conservative point of view. Joking amongst themselves that they wanted to “see Conservatives in their natural habitat”.
One claimed to be a writer.
Mike Pence pointed out
“There will always be more that unites us than will ever divide the good and great people of this country.”
I hope we all can stop degrading each other enough to see the beauty in Pence’s statement.
President Trump’s speech was received very enthusiastically by the crowd, often erupting in cheers and chants. Albeit there was a protester, but that too is what makes America great-a variety of opinions and thought.
Trump spoke of the Parkland school shooting suggesting that teachers need the offensive capability to protect themselves and the children. Allowing conceal and carry for teachers and coaches that are adept and mentally capable of handling firearms.
Also, saying gun-free zones actually put students and military bases in more danger.
The President referring to upcoming elections told the audience not to be complacent
“If they get in (Democrats) they’ll take away your Second Amendment rights-which we will never allow to happen.”
The crowd went wild.
While the tragic school shooting was a dominant theme at CPAC, President Trump talked significantly about the economy. 2.7 million jobs created since elections, unemployment claims are at a 45 year low. For women, unemployment is at lowest in 18 years, small business confidence is at a record high, Trump says.
From a personal standpoint, my finances increased about 12 months after Trump took office, and have been climbing since. Since taking office the economy and optimism in business have drastically improved.
That is thanks to Trump.
As of this writing, there is still another day at CPAC. While there is division, we are still Americans regardless of political affiliation, and our country like everything-is always in need of perpetual improvement.
We are individuals yet one, that is what makes America great.
