WASHINGTON. The dying legacy media is desperately clinging to the remnants of their former status as information gatekeepers. Meanwhile, the Poynter Institute, which touts itself as championing “freedom of expression, civil dialogue and compelling journalism,” recently released a list of 515 information outlets its “journalists, fact-checkers and researchers around the country” consider “unreliable.” The purpose of Poynter’s censors?
To help advertisers “stop funding misinformation… that might tar their brand with hate speech, falsehoods or some kinds of political messaging.” You can guess where this is going.
Stifling alternative voices
But which sites find themselves among the blacklist put out by the Poynter Institute censors?
- Ben Shapiro’s Daily Wire
- The Drudge Report
- The Washington Free Beacon
- PJ Media
- Judicial Watch
- Glenn Beck’s The Blaze
- The Heritage Foundation’s Daily Signal
… to name just a few.
The old guard
So who’s behind this Poynter Institute sham study? Among the Institute’s Board of Trustees are:
- Andy Corty: Times Publishing Company
- Monica Davey: Chicago Bureau Chief, The New York Times
- Paul C. Tash: Chairman and CEO of the Times Publishing Company
- Melissa Bell: Publisher, Vox Media, Inc.
- John Dickerson: Co-host, CBS This Morning
- Wesley Lowery: Reporter, The Washington Post
- Byron Pitts: Anchor, Nightline; Chief National Correspondent, ABC News
… to name just a few.
In its death throes
As the MSM audience shrinks, advertisers spend less on print and electronic news. So who funds the censors spearheading this new Poynter Institute adventure in media gatekeeping?
“The Poynter Institute, a global leader in journalism, is receiving $1.3 million in new grants from the Omidyar Network and Open Society Foundations to expand its work in accountability journalism through the international Fact-Checking Network in the coming years.”
George Orwell, meet George Soros
The Open Society Foundation is a creation of notorious leftist loon and billionaire, George Soros. And the international Fact-Checking Network is a modern take on George Orwell’s Ministry of Truth from his novel “1984.”
“… whose primary job was not to reconstruct the past but to supply the citizens of Oceania with newspapers, films, textbooks, telescreen programs, plays, novels – with every conceivable kind of information, instruction, or entertainment, from a statue to a slogan, from a lyric poem to a biological treatise, and from a child’s spelling book to a Newspeak dictionary.”
So what is “Newspeak”? According to an Orwellian thrall working in the Ministry of Truth, its purpose is to narrow the range of thought.
“… In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.”
That’s the same purpose Political Correctness serves in today’s media as enforced by left-wing Democrats and a legion of leftist academics and other public scolds and censors. Alternative media, on the other hand is unconstrained by such nonsense. That’s likely why the Poynter Institute sees its new Index of Forbidden Outlets as bravely outing the wrong “kinds of political messaging.”
Poynter finally gets the point
Subsequently, in an ironic development occurring just a few days after releasing its list of allegedly unreliable renegade information sites, Poynter’s managing editor, Barbara Allen, announced her organization had discovered a small problem. Poynter’s vigilant censors “found weaknesses in the methodology” behind their naked attempt at smearing dissenting sites opposing the leftist activism of fake-news elites.
Ironically, all this occurred shortly after Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s exoneration of President Trump for allegedly serving as a Russian double agent. After an extended, pre-planned Democrat Party smear trumpeted relentlessly by “reliable” fake news media outlets over the past two years. Outlets whose discredited minions currently sit on Poynter’s board of trustees.
Legacy media and the Deep State
With regard to the failed Mueller report, the legacy media (MSM) now finds itself in full meltdown mode over Attorney General William Barr. Specifically over the AG’s promise to investigate the promoters of the false narrative that Trump colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 election. Barr’s findings will further erode the public’s trust in the legacy media’s credibility. Especially when the coordination between President Obama’s weaponized Deep State and its willing accomplices in the press finally comes to light, unveiled in all its felonious glory.
Meanwhile, as if to bail out the epic Poynter Institute and Mueller report fails, Facebook kicked its own censorship efforts up another notch. This unaccountable social media giant announced it has banned (censored) Alex Jones of InfoWars, gay, right-wing gadfly Milo Yiannopoulos and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan for being “dangerous.”
Farrakhan’s anti-Semitism is vial and disgusting. But so is that of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, who still maintains her scurrilous Facebook page. As does Farrakhan fellow-traveler, Barack Obama.
It’s likely as the supremely outrageous Farrakhan was singled out as Facebook’s token left-wing counterbalance to the company’s otherwise near-100 percent focus on banning influential conservative sites.
Still smarting from 2016
Looking back, soon after Trump’s dramatic victory in the 2016 presidential election, a study commissioned by the Columbia Journalism Review attempted to explain what it clearly saw as a disasterous detour in the American left’s long march toward a totally regulated, Marxist-centered one-party state.
“Our own study of over 1.25 million stories published online between April 1, 2015 and Election Day shows that a right-wing media network anchored around Breitbart developed as a distinct and insulated media system, using social media as a backbone to transmit a hyper-partisan perspective to the world.
“This pro-Trump media sphere appears to have not only successfully set the agenda for the conservative media sphere, but also strongly influenced the broader media agenda, in particular coverage of Hillary Clinton.”
In other words, legacy media lost its monopoly on information. Consequently, it suddenly found itself unable to control the political narrative in 2016. Worse, as the cost of printing and distribution of old media increased and led to reductions in staff, more cost-effective alternative media used the Internet and social media platforms to cut through the noise of the mainstream media’s relentlessly pro-Clinton narrative.
But the new, vigorous conservative online presence forced some in the old guard to address Hillary Clinton’s actions threatening women who spoke out about her husband’s sexual predation. And more importantly, this development allowed Trump to make his case on illegal immigration without the constant demands by political reporters that he alter his terminology to favor PC-permitted language choices when discussing such topics as “anchor babies.” Shades of Orwell’s Ministry of Truth.
Blaming the lying hack of a messenger
So it’s clear that leftist controlled non-profits like the Poynter Institute, along with legacy media and left-leaning social media owners like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey wish to delegitimize or de-platform alternative voices. In the end, theirs is a blatant attempt to control the political narrative ahead of the 2020 presidential contest. But that train has clearly left the station.
Finally, the Trump/Russia collusion hoax has now proven to be a laughable conspiracy theory. Furthered by legacy media, this shameful charade has forever tarred the legacy media brand. In the future, this disgraceful episode in American history will be remembered as the final nail in the legacy media’s coffin.
