Chamber of Commerce CEO: Cheap immigrant labor is better than American labor

Jim Bozeman

MILLINOCKET, Maine, February 16, 2014 – Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently wrote an op-ed piece entitled  “A steady flow of talented, industrious immigrants can fuel a booming economy.”

In the article, Mr. Donohue makes this statement, “Immigration can also address labor shortages in lesser-skilled fields where there are insufficient numbers of either qualified or willing U.S. workers to fill positions.”

We have long heard the timeworn argument that immigrants will do the jobs that Americans don’t want to do. Now, Mr. Donohue has injected the word “qualified” as further denunciation of American workers.

What makes a “qualified” farm worker? Two legs, two arms and reasonable hand-eye coordination are required. Is Mr. Donohue suggesting that American workers don’t even have those basic qualifications?

What determines if a job seeker is “willing?” Has Mr. Donohue taken an extensive survey in which American workers are given a choice between having a job or not having one?

The simple truth is that when a contractor pulls into the parking lot of a home improvement store looking for day laborers, he knows that most of the workers are illegals. But he doesn’t care. He just wants warm bodies who do what they’re told for minimal wages.

It’s so much easier than dealing with pesky job applications and interviews that legal American workers can handle without an interpreter.

    The Operative Word is ‘CHEAP’.
It’s not that Americans won’t do the work. It’s that the Big Money Employers don’t want to pay for it.
