WASHINGTON, July 25, 2017 — In a statement read to a British court, while the mother of his son wept nearby, Chris Gard said the couple will end their legal battle to save their 11-month-old child, Charlie.
Suffering from mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, Charlie’s parents raised $2 million in hopes of taking their boy to America for experimental treatments. But Britain’s draconian National Health Service and a so-called “human rights court” denied them their freedom to choose.
“We are now in July, and our poor boy has been left to just lie in a hospital for months without any treatment, while lengthy court battles have been fought,” the distraught father told the court. He added that if his son had “been given treatment sooner, he would have had the potential to be a normal little boy.”
Charlie Gard’s impending death, sanctioned by a dictatorial government-run medical bureaucracy, is the ultimate expression of what the political left calls “equality.”
Had baby Charlie escaped the grasp of Britain’s nanny state, and the child’s American medical treatments proved successful, other victims of socialist state arrogance may have followed the example of Charlie’s parents and raised funds to pay for their child’s medical treatment’s abroad.
And that wouldn’t be “fair” to those parents unable to do the same.
The leftist doctrine is known as the “equality of outcome” has condemned Charlie to death. Under this notion, life is seen as a foot race where runners of limited abilities rely on referees to hobble the swift to assure that all cross the finish line together.
Even if the prize is death.
The great thinkers of the Enlightenment saw equality in a decidedly different light. As John Locke famously said, “Being all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions.”
Embellishing upon Locke, Thomas Jefferson penned, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
Under Locke and Jefferson’s “equality of opportunity,” the individual isn’t hobbled by state referees in the name of “fairness.” They can’t since “all men are created equal,” neither slaves nor masters. Furthermore, one of the only legitimate functions of government is to protect the individual’s greatest possession: their precious life.
The passage of dictatorial Obamacare in 2010 represented a dramatic and diabolical departure from America’s Enlightenment traditions, dedicated as they are to the preservation of the individual’s life and liberty.
Feckless Republicans in Congress should think of baby Charlie and his heartsick parents while deciding whether to fulfill their seven-year-old pledge to repeal monstrous Obamacare along with its death panels.
The left’s twisted definition of equality has made little Charlie Gard an equal with the starving people of Venezuela. Both are the doomed winners in socialism’s race to the bottom. Both are equals in the most tragic of outcomes – death.
