CHARLOTTE, NC, November 14, 2014 – Some analysts are saying the honeymoon following the recent midterm elections is over. In reality there never was a honeymoon. There wasn’t even a wedding.
The new congress hasn’t even had a chance to dip its toes in the ocean to test the water and already they are facing a potential constitutional crisis.
For a president who is able to procrastinate on any decision which forces him to govern, Barack Obama is always quick to respond when his ego or his agenda is challenged.
During the 2008 presidential campaign Mitt Romney took Obama to task during the first debate. The president was soundly beaten to the extent that he even embarrassed diehard followers in his own party and the media.
What followed was a vengeful display by Mr. Obama that let everyone know it is not nice to make him look foolish.
With the sweeping Republican victory last week, Obama was once again diminished, but not for long. The question now becomes, did the American people truly see through the White House façade or will Obama’s allies in the media continue to hide the truth?
If the Jonathan Gruber revelations about Obamacare are any indication, it appears the citizens of the United States will have to rely on themselves to get the facts. Certainly the major networks and elite newspapers in the country will not report anti-Obama stories.
Without conservative talk radio and FOX News, Gruber’s comments would have gone completely unnoticed.
This time however, such shenanigans could backfire on the president and the media. America let it be known that they are tired of Washington’s BS and they want something to get done that is positive and worthwhile.
The Gruber brouhaha may be about past legislation but it has also created new interest by the Supreme Court in the healthcare law which might rule against the administration next time around.
Undaunted since the elections, the president has also made a highly questionable environmental deal with China and is rumored to be working on some sort of agreement with Iran. Given the current mood of the country, neither of those issues will play well with the electorate either.
To complete his legislative coup, Obama now says he may be “forced” to issue an executive order on immigration amnesty which has even raised some eyebrows within his own party and a few members of his usually supportive press.
Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer was taken out of context when he said that a lone amnesty move by the president would be an impeachable offense. Krauthammer was correct, but the fallacy in the reporting was that it sounded like he supports impeachment, which he does not.
Impeachment would be a drain on time and energy by the Republicans with virtually no gain since Obama is so close to completing his term in office.
What Obama’s bag of tricks does indicate is that the president plans to continue his political games, even amid his weakened lame duck position, to bottleneck the Republicans from accomplishing anything productive.
If that is indeed Mr. Obama’s strategy, then we may quickly learn whether Jonathan Gruber was correct about the “stupidity of the American people.”
If Americans buy into White House gamesmanship, with or without the media telling them how to think, or not, then Gruber will be correct in his assessment.
On the other hand, gambling that he can “pull the wool” over the eyes of the American people for eight straight years without consequence may just be a couple of years too long for the president. Such schemes could backfire on him to the extent that he only serves to strengthen his Republican opposition.
That might make Obama a pariah in both parties before someone else takes the oath of office.
No matter. Barack already has his tee times scheduled for January, 2017 and whatever the state of the union is by then will be someone else’s problem.
From day one the Obama agenda has never been about Democrat vs Republican. It has always focused on fundamentally changing the constitutional road map established by our founding fathers more than 200 years ago. The president may not have succeeded in every goal he set out to reach, but in his own sinister way, anything he achieves from here on out is gravy.
To put it in George Bush lingo, “Mission Accomplished.”
