Report card for our elected officials

Make sure you know who you are voting for; their performance is our responsibility.

ST. LOUIS, July 9, 2015 – With the 2016 elections right around the corner, it’s time to take a hard look at how our elected officials are performing. The easy answer is “not good,” and that is true for both parties, Congress and the executive branch.

Our representatives seem to have forgotten the words of the Declaration of Independence:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness, that to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the people.”

Our officials do derive their power from us, the people, and we need to seriously weight both those who are currently in office and those who want to take their place. If we don’t replace the non-performers in government, the situation will just continue.

Our government is mired in scandals. They include Benghazi, Fast and Furious, the Veterans Administration, IRS and the list goes on and on. Even more disturbing,  the offenders never get punished. Instead, they are just moved to another position and out of the public spotlight.

Our officials have done very little to protect our country. Yesterday’s computer glitch at the New York Stock Exchange was just a preview of what a terrorist could do to our infrastructure. A well placed computer virus could shut down our power grid completely. Communications, banks, government, Wall Street, businesses and homes would all stand silent, unable to operate without power.

Already experts warn there are terrorists inside our country, and even if they aren’t physically here, they could target our poorly-protected infrastructure.

Beyond infrastructure, what is government doing to protect us from other terrorist attacks on our own soil? ISIS, al-Qaeda, al-Shabaab and Boko Haram are real threats, yet we do nothing. We are not prepared.

Our open borders create a security risk. Terrorists, criminals, and members of drug cartels can all sneak across our porous borders. What does our government do? They put out the welcome mat.

Finally, the straw that is breaking our backs is the rampant dishonesty in government. Those elected officials, put in office by we the people, stand on their pedestal and outright lie to the American public.

Seniors have seen good and bad politicians, and we have seen the honest and the dishonest. We have watched strong men and women lead this country and stand strong in the face of adversary, and we have seen cowards who are so power hungry they care only about themselves and not about true America.

It is easy to get discouraged and to give up, but we have a responsibility to vote for good candidates who can help lead this country forward.

Remember they all work for us and maybe we the people have to share some of the blame for the state of affairs we are in. So really check out who you will be voting for in this coming election and you must vote for the person not the political party.

Start educating yourself now. It’s not to early.
