Product Review: Microwave Pasta Cooker by LeKue

LOS ANGELES, May 8, 2014 — Wake up, drop off the kids at school, run to work…work, work, work then leave work, rush to pick up the kids, frantically make dinner and then start it all over the next day. This is the story of many families and though food and meals are an important part of the day it’s often the last thing we think about.

Secretly we hope little elves will sneak in our kitchens and cook it for us.

LeKue may not have little elves but their products are developed to save you time and energy and still give you a good meal at the end of the day. Their Pasta Cooker is one such product that helps you save time.

Pasta Test 1: Penne and  Farfalle:


Step 1- Add pasta to the container, step 2- add water to just cover the top of the pasta, step 3- place the lid on top of the base, step 4-place it in the microwave and cook the pasta for the same amount of time the bag instructs, step 5-flip the lid and place it on the base, step 6- pour the water out through the holes. .

The farfalle was under cooked by 4 minutes.

The penne was under cooked by 4 minutes.

Pasta Test 2: Cooking pasta in a pot vs. The Lekue Pasta Cooker

The company is placing a new manual in the box and it will give specific cooking times for each pasta type.  Pasta test 2 was done following these new instructions.

Pasta cooked in a pot of boiling water: Step 1- add water, step 2- bring to a boil (7 minutes), step 3-add pasta (same amount that will be use in the LeKue), step 4- cook until the pasta is al dente (10 minutes 30 seconds the bag indicates the pasta will cook in 9 minutes), step 5- strain and set aside.  Total time: 17 minutes 30 seconds

Pasta cooked in LeKue Pasta Cooker: Step 1- place pasta in Pasta Cooker, step 2- add water to just above the pasta, step 3- place the lid on top of the base, step 4 place the container in the microwave and cook the pasta for 14 minutes, step 5-flip the lid and place it on the base, step 6-pour the water out through the holes.  Total time: 14 minutes

Pros:

First, The Pasta Cooker is bright and colorful.

Second, it saved 3 minutes

Third, you have the ability to put the Pasta Cooker in the microwave and forget it until the pasta is finished (unlike pasta in a pot).

Cons:

First, it’s difficult to get a good grip on the Pasta Cooker with out handles.

Second, It doesn’t save a ton of time.

Third, there is no max line so it’s difficult to tell how much is too much.

Fourth, the lid doesn’t feel secure when you are trying to pour out the water.

Fifth, it makes only 2-3 portions of pasta.

Overall Rating:  Between a ¼ and a 1/2-cup out of 1 cup. Even though it doesn’t save a ton of time and it doesn’t make a ton of pasta it could be useful for a busy working parent who just wants to make dinner as quick as possible for themselves or for their children.

Other benefits include not having to worry about the water boiling over or the pasta overcooking (or at least not as bad as it would if you left a pot of pasta on the stove for an exceedingly long time).
