MISSOURI, February 14, 2017 — Valentine’s Day has been around for hundreds of years.
It was in AD 496 Pope Gelasius I named February 14th as “Valentine’s Day.” This is not an official holiday, but a lot of Americans celebrate this day.
We celebrate it throughout our lives, starting as a child in grade school and until we become senior citizens.
Grade school celebration in years past consisted of bringing Valentine’s with a cute saying to school and putting them in a decorated box with a slot in the top for other students.
Most of the Valentine’s were hand made out of red paper and cut in the shape of a heart. At the Valentine’s Party on February 14, each child would reach in and get a valentine. It was an exciting day, with red, pink and white decorations.
As we reach adult hood, the recognition and exchanging of Valentine’s become more elaborate and more romantic. It becomes a day of sweethearts and love. It is a day to show those around you that you care. Many adults send roses, the flower of love, or candy, or even jewelry to mark Valentine’s Day.
For many, having a day to recognize your friends and sweetheart is great. It reminds you that love does exist, even in this day and age, and it gives us a moment to reflect on that love.
Love is a foundation for marriage and friendship is important throughout the year. Remember those you love, not only on Valentine’s Day, but every day. Listen to what they say and show you are truly interested in them as people. Be honest with them, be kind, and smile when you are with them.
Seniors know the real joy of love. It is a simple thing that is often the most important element of life. A few years ago, I was at a senior meeting with two gentlemen in their eighties. They shared stories of years gone by, listened and laughed, and appreciated each other. The light in their eyes and the smiles on their faces showed just how much they cared, just how important the love they have for each other is.
Celebrate Valentine’s Day because it is special.
Celebrate the ones you love because they are special too.
