Chevrolet boosts the 2016 Volt electric range by 40 percent

GM CEO, Mary Barra, announces the new Chevrolet Volt for 2016

Los Angeles, August 4, 2015 — Not only do EPA tests confirm Chevy’s 2016 Volt gets a 40 percent improvement in its pure electric vehicle (EV) range to 53 miles (or 106 MPGe), but also means that Volt owners will use zero emissions electric power in 90 percent of their road trips. Is the 2016 Chevy Volt the perfect “no compromise” green car?

This almost unbelievable increase in electric power from the new 18.4 kWh lithium ion battery makes this second-generation Volt one of the best auto buys for those who want to help curb carbon emissions, yet have the luxury of a vehicle with extended range (around 420 miles on a full tank).

Chevy also claims the increase in EV range means Volt owners who charge regularly can “travel well over 1,000 miles between gas fill ups.” Of course, that would depend on whether or not you take any long road trips, but certainly the Volt makes for a convenient, luxurious and tech-filled touring car with its 1.5-liter gasoline-powered engine, which gets an EPA-estimated 42 mpg.

Along with improved power trains, the 2016 Volt was also upgraded inside and out.

Chevy seems most proud of its new “smartphone projection technology.” Using Chevy’s MyLink system, this plug-in car’s huge 8-inch colorful display now supports Apple’s iPhone 5 apps via its Apple CarPlay feature (for hands-free calls and text messaging as well as maps and music). In addition, Chevy also reinvented its digital instrument panel to make things like charging the battery and checking charging status much easier.

Other improvements include:

==New two-motor drive unit is up to 12 percent more efficient, is 100 pounds lighter (45 kg) than the first-generation drive unit and is 19-percent stronger in 0-30 mph acceleration

–Battery capacity increased to 18.4 kWh using 192 cells (96 fewer than current generation) with weight reduced by more than 20 pounds

–Chevy’s innovative Regen on Demand™ feature enables driver control of energy regeneration via a convenient paddle on the back of the steering wheel. Chevy also claims the new braking system has a more “blended regen feel.”

–The new Volt’s exterior design looks less like a funky sedan and more like a sporty performance car with its sexy pointy nose, super sculpted sidelines and racy back side.

–Battery charging enhancements include automatic adjustments for charging at home based on GPS data, 120 volt charging pre-sets, easier-to-read charging indicators and a more compact 120-volt charging cord.

–Ten air bags and a rear view camera come standard while other advanced “active” safety features such as lane keep assist, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert and rear cross traffic alert are optional.

Need one more reason to choose the 2016 Chevrolet Volt? This stunning sedan now fits five passengers, which finally makes Volt a real “no compromise” green car.
