Beyond multivitamins: Omega-3 fatty acids
SAN DIEGO, January 20, 2015 — Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients necessary for overall good health.
They are not commonly found in a standard multivitamin but are critically involved in many functions of the human body.
Omega-3 fatty acids are of three major types:
- Alpha-linolenic (ALA)
- Eicosapentaenoic (EPA)
- Docosahexaenoic (DHA)
They were first discovered in the 1950’s by Johanna Budwig, PhD., a German scientist, and she incorporated them into a nutrient-rich diet administered to her cancer patients.
According to the American Cancer Society, thousands of patients who were treated with Dr. Budwig’s nutrient-packed diet experienced reduction in tumor progression or other significant health improvements.
The case for consuming adequate amounts of food which are high in omega-3 fatty acids is compelling.
Commonly known diseases which plague society with high treatment costs and great human suffering, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, depression, asthma, developmental disabilities, Alzheimer’s and autoimmune disease could be related to inadequate levels of omega-3 fatty acids.
According to Dr. Andrew Weil, the average American diet lacks sufficient amounts of omega-3 fatty acids to foster good health.
With possible deficiencies causing a variety of symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, and dry skin and hair, a blood test to measure levels of omega-3 fatty acids can be administered by a qualified medical profession.
Omega-3 fatty acids are found in a variety of foods, and it is recommended to include at least one of them in the daily diet:
*Seafood (consume 2-3 times each week)
*Not recommended for those with an allergy to any type of seafood
There are a variety of non-seafood foods available to delight the palate:
-Flaxseeds and flaxseed oil
*Not suitable for those with a known allergy to nuts
Medical professionals can help advise on specific dosages of Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation and their benefits for individual patients.
When buying an omega-3 supplement, be certain to read the label to check its contents for mercury, allergens and other unwanted contaminants.
Fish oil capsules could be an ideal supplement for adding omega-3 fatty acids to the diet, and suitable for those without an allergy to seafood.
The lesser known algae oil supplement is a great option for adding fatty acids to the everyday diet without the potentially harmful effects caused by a seafood allergy.
Another benefit of consuming omega-3 fatty acids is that they may improve appearance while fighting the effects of aging.
Omega-3 fatty acids are a known wrinkle fighter!

Alternatively, find just the right omega-3 fatty acid supplement and reap the health benefits that way.
Preventing disease is far more desirable than needing to cure it!
