Written By | Jun 19, 2018

SAN DIEGO, June 19, 2018– Summer is arriving in the Northern Hemisphere June 21st this year!  Which means it is time for good times and sunshine.

SUMMER SOLSTICE

Also known as the summer solstice, June 21st is the longest day of the year.   As the sun reaches its highest point in the sky as summer begins, blessing our Hemisphere with unrelenting and welcoming rays of light.

SUMMER SOLSTICE DOES NOT OCCUR ON THE SAME DAY EVERY YEAR

Ever wonder why summer does not begin on the exact same day each year?

According to Old Farmer’s Almanac,

“This occurs in part because of the difference between the Gregorian calendar system and the tropical year (how long it takes Earth to orbit the Sun once)….To compensate for the missing fraction of days, the Gregorian calendar adds a leap day about every 4 years.”

Moreover, Mother Earth and therefore the start of summer, are also impacted by the gravitational pull from the moon and planets, while also adjusting to the Earth’s rotational changes.

“SUN IS SHINING. WEATHER IS SWEET. MAKE YOU WANNA MOVE YOUR DANCING FEET.”
-Bob Marley

The Great American Road trip is truly a national tradition.

With the ending of World War II and the development of American highways and byways, hundreds and thousands of people take to the roadways throughout the summer. They pack up the car, SUV or truck and take family and friends to favorite destinations,. They head to splendid beaches, majestic national parks and visit family and friends in other cities in such a fun and relatively affordable way.

According to Talia Wagner, a Los Angeles marriage and family therapist, published in LiveScience,

“Road trips came to symbolize freedom and independence, values Americans hold dear. It is no wonder then every summer, when children are out of school, and the rising heat makes us restless, people start thinking about vacations.”
