Project Enye: Forming a community of first generation American born Latinos

Whether you are an Enye or a Fr’enye, everybody can relate to this project.


DENVER, May 25, 2015 – The term Enye (ñ) refers to a first-generation American born Latino. Enyes are a group of people that haven’t really been identified yet. Many Enyes don’t realize that they have a connection and that there is a whole community of people just like them.

First time Enye filmmaker Denise Soler Cox has teamed up with four-time Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award nominee Henry Ansbacher to bring “Project Enye” to life. Project Enye is a multi-platform documentary project about first-generation American-born Latinos that uses cultural and familial stories to build community among this large population. The leading organizing principle of the project is that Enyes share a distinct identity, shaped by their experience growing up between two cultures. Their “home” culture reflects the heritage of their family’s country of origin and is often in conflict with the American culture they experience everywhere outside of the home. The co-directors have created a cutting edge content and media distribution strategies to engage an energetic audience of Enyes across the country.

The goal of the project is to bring awareness of the Enye experience by bringing the term into our social vernacular. Introducing this term is important to everybody, especially to those who struggle trying to find a place where they fit in. The creators of this innovative project hope that Enyes can build a community full of support and understanding.  While the idea is not political, it will, hopefully, be used to give people a look at what is going on with fresh eyes and an open mind.

Each week “Project Enye” releases a new micro-doc episode that features a different Enye story. Each 3- to 5- minute episode gives people a glimpse at a first-person narrative from one of Americas 16 million Enyes. The episodes cover a wide range of topics, from food to politics and everything in between. The documentary features celebrities like Luis Guzman and Johnny Ortiz as well as everyday people. Each episode is different, but they all allude to universal truths that can resonate with Enyes and with non-Enyes that the co-directors refer to as Fr’enyes (short for friends of Enyes).

In addition to the micro-doc series, there is a weekly podcast series led by the co-directors. The podcast delves into many topics and gives listeners a better understanding of the project. Listeners can access transcripts on the site so they can review which each podcast covers before they listen.

Project Enye uses all social media platforms to promote not only their project but also the community they are bringing together. They release 15-second clips on Instagram, hold contests on FaceBook and reach out on several other platforms. You can connect with them on Twitter, FaceBook, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube, Google Plus and more.

There are a few ways that the public can become involved with Project Enye. The first is by crowdfunding. There will be a crowdfunding campaign starting on Tuesday. It is a 30-day campaign that the public can donate to for the project. The “Enyes Count Campaign” is looking to put 160,000 of the 16 million Enyes on a map. Enyes are encouraged to donate $1.60 or more to put their name on a map that will show Enyes all over the country. The money raised will help the next phase of the project. Fr’enyes can also donate and be put on a list of Enye supporters.

#EnyesCount campaign is the nation’s first socially driven effort to count Enyes in America.

Project Enye has a wide variety of merchandise available to purchase. The proceeds will also help with the next phase of the project. Donors to the Enyes Count Campaign will receive a 20 percent discount on merchandise.

Whether you are an Enye or a Fr’enye, everybody can relate to this project. Everybody wants to know they have a community they belong to and Project Enye hopes to provide that for many people in the U.S. The Project Enye documentary is set to premiere this fall.
