SAN DIEGO, September 16, 2014 – After eliminating the Tuesday night results show last season, fans get their results show fix back in Season 19.
Sure, there is a lot of killing time with behind the scenes footage, guest performances and dance routines. You got a problem with that? The fans don’t. The Tuesday night show allows for more time to be devoted during the performance show to performing, and the departing contestants don’t get the bum’s rush or hear unexpected news during an interview with host Tom Bergeron in the middle of the show.
For this first week, the results shows featued Derek Hough’s original audition tape for the show from 2006, a routine with the three new pro dancers on the show and performances from Smokey Robinson and Aloe Blacc. The encore choice was the Jive from Alfonso Ribiero and Witney Carson.
But the results are what the show is about in the end. If you want to know the results, skip to the end.
DWTS named two couples from the middle of the pack safe first, Antonio Sabato Jr. and Cheryl Burke, and Tavis Smiley and Sharna Burgess. The first couple in danger was the one at the very bottom of the leaderboard, Betsey Johnson and Tony Dovoloni.
The next pair of dancers saved were also from the middle of the pack, Janel Parrish and Val Chmerkovskiy, and Randy Couture and Karina Smirnoff. Michael Waltrip and Emma Slater were added to the group in danger.
The group of dancers who weren’t going anywhere were gotten out of the way: Alfonso and Witney, Sadie Robertson and Mark Ballas, and Bethany Mota and Derek Hough. To the surprise of many, Lea Thompson and Arte, Chigvintsev were added to the bottom group. But fans should remember that those in jeopardy are not necessarily the ones with the lowerst scores. DWTS producers sometimes do this to get fans’ attention when they aren’t voting for a competitor they would like to keep around a while.
Cheers went up when Tommy Chong and Peta Murgatroyd were called safe, and Jonathan Bennett cheered for himself as he and Allison Holker move on. Lolo Jones and Keo Motsepe rounded out a bottom group of four.
The bottom two on the leaderboard were the two left at the end, Betsey and Tony and Lolo and Keo. Lolo Jones joined the One and Done Club, eliminated from the show after a disappointing effort. Jones did it to herself, but unfortunately she took exciting new pro Motsepe down with her. DWTS should put him to work in the troupe the rest of the season. He is a Latin champion and fun to watch.
Week 2’s show theme is “My Jam Monday.” It seems similar to last season’s “Party Rock Anthem Week.” The definition of Party Rock Anthems was a bit loose for our taste. We will find out what qualifies as a “Jam” next week. Join us in our CDN virtual ballroom for another live online chat.
“Dancing With the Stars” returns for Week 2 on Monday, September 22, at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time on the ABC Television Network.
