WASHINGTON, October 19, 2014 – Not so long ago, Sunday evening TV was a bit on the dull side unless you were devoted to football. That’s not the case this TV season, as NFL’s finest (at least the ones who aren’t in jail) now have to contend with top-drawing series on regular and cable networks alike.

Here’s our list of best bets for Sunday night couch potatoes, whether they’re into football, crime, or gore. (Listed times are EDT. Consult your local listings.):

8 p.m.

ABC: Once Upon a Time

This weird but popular update on time-honored fairy tales continues its oddball journey. After Emma asks Hook out on a real first date, Hook visits Mr. Gold and asks for his hand to be reattached so that he can embrace her with both hands. But magic always comes with a price. Meanwhile, Henry and Mary Margaret offer hope to Regina, who’s frustrated by her inability to find a cure to save a frozen Marian. Will Scarlet attempts to break into the Storybrooke library to find a special book. Meanwhile, back in the Fairy Tale Land that was, Rumplestiltskin is after a magical box that the Sorcerer’s apprentice is guarding. Never trust a guy whose name is Rumplestiltskin.

FOX: Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror XXV Special

Bart and Lisa stake out their own territory in Hades as the movie parodies and visual one-liners fly fast and thick. For our special preview, check out this link.

AMC: The Walking Dead

AMC’s not telling us much except that “Rick leads a risky mission when the supplies begin to run low.” “Risky” in this context can only mean one thing: watch out for your brain tissue. It could get munched.

And don’t forget our live “Walking Dead” chat tonight. Tune in to CDN during the show where we’ll feature our running commentary and interaction with “Walking Dead” fan-atics.

NBC: Sunday Night Football: San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos.

8 p.m. is the listed time here, but the kickoff will probably start the game at approximately 8:20 giving you time to stock up on snack trays and brewskis.

9:00 p.m.

SHOWTIME: Homeland

Showtime is keeping its preview cards close to the vest, too. Tonight, Carrie gets a tip. Saul calls in a favor. Fara uncovers a conspiracy. As we all know, life is dangerous and unpredictable these days, so this series may not be far off base.

CBS: The Good Wife

Alicia is indeed a good wife, but we’re not sure if that extends to her bedroom preferences. Dean and Alicia represent a former chief executive who is suing the company that fired her. They go head to head with Elsbeth and Rayna. Florrick/Agos/Lockhart are threatened by a hacker. Actually, we’re all threatened by hackers in 2014, so it’s easy to identify with these folks except for their income levels.

10 p.m.

CBS: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

Our favorite crime series returns with another new episode. Tonight, a chemistry teacher’s science experiment goes terribly wrong, leading the team to believe foul play is involved.
