WASHINGTON, July 21, 2017 – After two months of being without an official communications director, President Donald Trump is expected to appoint Trump supporter and Fox News contributor Anthony Scaramucci to the post. News of the appointment was first reported by Axios. Scaramucci had also been seen recently meeting with President Trump at the White House.

The White House communications director is responsible for developing and promoting agenda of the president and leading the administration’s media campaign. He is also responsible for organizing key presidential addresses including the annual State of the Union Address before Congress.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has been balancing the positions of press secretary and communications director since former communications director Mike Dubke resigned in May. Trump has been openly unhappy with his communications team almost from the beginning of his term and likely hopes that a strong figure like Scaramucci will be able to steady the communications ship.

The founder of hedge-fund firm SkyBridge Capital, Scaramucci is best known for his high-profile career as a key Wall Street financier and major Republican donor. Prior to becoming a staunch Trump supporter, he had previously backed Scott Walker and then Jeb Bush.

He is currently working at the Export-Import Bank but is expected to leave that post to take the communications director job. While Scaramucci does not have formal communications experience, he has become an effective defender of President Trump on network and cable TV.

Scaramucci had previously been expected to lead the White House Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs under the Trump presidency. He had also been discussed as a possible candidate for ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

White House officials cautioned that talks involving the new appointment could still fall apart. Scaramucci was the subject of a CNN hit piece on his business ties, but that network later retracted the story.

News of Scaramucci’s appointment surprised Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who wasn’t made aware of the move until it was finalized. Some believe that Priebus may attempt to block the appointment.
