SAN DIEGO, May 3, 2015 – ‘Game of Thrones’ has always been about choices, the kind of choices we all make. Who should we trust? Who has our best interests at heart? Who is true in love? Should we punish our enemies, or turn the other cheek? Give in to conflict, or work toward peace?
At this midway point, we are still meeting new characters. The three women called the “Sand Snakes,” three of the bastard daughters of Prince Oberyn Martell, will be urged by Ellaria Sand to avenge his death. These fierce warriors have the means to do it. At the urging of his sister Cersei, Jaime Lannister and Bronn head south to meet the threat in Dorne head-on.
The insurgent element in Meereen grows ever more threatening, and Daenerys Targaryen is having trouble keeping a lid on the unrest and violence. What will she do about it while staying true to her principles?
There is also plenty of unrest in King’s Landing, where the followers of the High Sparrow grow increasingly aggressive. Cersei appeals to the High Sparrow himself for help in quelling the troublesome religious sect.
At the end of episode three, Jorah Mormont recognized Varys and Tyrion Lannister. He pounced on Tyrion, binding and gagging him. He tells Tyrion he is taking him to “the queen.” Will he deliver Tyrion to Cersei for execution – or another blonde queen?
Arya Stark and Sansa Stark find themselves facing uncertain futures. They have no one to rely on but themselves, forcing them to sharpen their wits to survive. Arya is slowly learning the ways of the House of Black and White, though they do not make sense to her. Sansa Stark is resigning herself to the prosper of marrying Ramsey Bolton; she will have to be patience and wait for the opportunity to exact her revenge for the Red Wedding.
Communities Digital News hosts a live fan chat for every show to share observations, and though book readers are welcome, we hold strictly to a “no spoilers,” no discussion of the books until storylines are fully revealed. This year, the HBO edition is diverging more and more from the fifth and final published book.
“Game of Thrones: Season 5, Episode 4, “Sons of the Harpy,” airs Sunday, May 3, at 9 p.m. on HBO (with numerous repeats of the episodes throughout the week).
