SILVER SPRING, Maryland, May 9, 2015 – Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman (ISBN: 9780394800189) is a classic tale perfect to share with your little ones on Mother’s Day. If the new mom in your family does not already have this on the shelf, it makes a lovely gift on Mother’s Day.
The story follows a little bird on a journey to find his mother. He hatches out of his egg to find that he is all alone and decides to set out to find his mother. But when he tries to fly out of his nest, he falls to the ground.
Not easily discouraged, the little bird sets out on foot, asking everything he comes into contact with if it is his mother. The kitten is not his mother. Neither is the hen, the dog or the cow. He moves farther from his nest and encounters an old car, a plane, and a boat.
None of those are his mother either.
Finally, he comes across a steam shovel. When he gets too close, it scoops him up and dumps the little bird back in his nest. The little bird is relieved to be home, and just as he gets comfortable, his mother comes back and says, “Do you know who I am?”
The little bird knows she is not all of the things he met one his journey, and realizes that she is a bird, and must be his mother.
With simple writing this book is good for very young children, who can relate to the little bird who yells “I want my mother!” This is a great book to give as a Mother’s Day gift to a new mother.
