SAN DIEGO, May 16, 2015 – More than halfway through Season 5 on “Game of Thrones,” fans have had little more than a glimpse here and there of the kingdom of Dorne and its characters.
It appears from promotional photos and video this will finally be rectified.
Dorne’s ruling family has been shattered by the death last season of Prince Oberyn, the dashing younger brother of Dorne’s ruler, Prince Doran. Oberyn’s lover, Ellaria Sand, wants Doran to get revenge on the Lannister family and King’s Landing for what she sees as his murder.
She hopes to enlist the help of the “Sand Snakes,” Oberyn’s eight daughters by various women.
Doran’s guards, led by the fearsome Areo Hotah, won’t allow this to include any harm to Myrcella Baratheon, Cersei’s youngest daughter and Doran’s ward. Myrcella is supposed to marry Prince Trystane Martell, Doran’s youngest son, to strengthen ties between the kingdoms. Trystane and Areo’s men will have to decide where their loyalties lie.
Hotah is also Prince Doran’s assistant, as Doran is unable to walk, similar to Bran Stark. Does this make him the Hodor of Dorne?
In Braavos, Arya has finally proven herself to the Faceless Men that she is worthy of their training, and we see the training begin this week. Count on it not being what she hoped for.
Tyrion and Jorah survived the attack by the Stonemen in Valyria, but Jorah may not have long before the grayscale turns him into one of the GOT zombies. This is a departure from the novels and we can’t wait to see where it goes.
In another departure from the novels. Lady Olenna Tyrell makes her return. Recall that Margaery Tyrell said she would reach out to her powerful grandmother to win the release of her brother Loras, who was arrested by the Faith Militants who follow the High Sparrow – aided behind the scenes by Cersei. In the novels we don’t see Olenna again after the Red Wedding, so this is another welcome development by the series producers.
Be sure to watch the behind the scenes video explaining how “Game of Thrones” producers created Dorne in Spain and Braavos in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Our live fan chat is back this week. Join us as Communities Digital News discusses all the twists and turns of each episode. Book readers welcome; we hold strictly to a “no spoilers” discussion until storylines are fully revealed. As the series continues to go its own way from the novels in several important respects, “Sullied” fans (book readers) and “Unsullied” fans (non-book readers) are increasingly on the same page.
“Game of Thrones: Season 5, Episode 6, “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”airs Sunday, May 17, at 9 p.m. on HBO (with numerous repeats of the episodes throughout the week).
